Official yack away thread - Czech-it-Out Graphics - 03-26-2008 stereotypes are based on reality lmao poncho I found the radio im still looking for the rest of the shit Matt you still want that radical, hit me up im off this week Official yack away thread - Ponch - 03-26-2008 Cool. LMK. Thanks Official yack away thread - team3six - 03-29-2008 Remember a little while back Dave was bragging about how much he enjoyed 300. Well I came across some 300 amusement... Official yack away thread - Michowski - 03-29-2008 Wooooooooooooooooooo Official yack away thread - FreeRideFrosty - 04-15-2008 I'm pretty sure there are at least a couple car guys here.... Your thoughts. I am likely going to be selling my GTI in the near future. I'm bored with driving an auto and just kind of bored with the car itself. I can hopefully get around $10k or a little more for it because it is in really good shape and low miles for an '03 at only 42k. I am looking for a reliable daily driver (so not terrible fuel mileage) but that is also fast (or can be made fast) and is fun to drive. These are my thoughts for now: Subaru WRX: I can get one around $11-12k if I really look that would be stock, or have a few simple mods. The AWD would be nice in winter. It's sort of quick in stock form and you can really get a lot out of them. From what I have heard and read they are pretty reliable as well. Lexus IS300: I have found several online with around 80k miles for an '02 right around $11k or $12k as well. It's not very fast stock but it is a nice car and it is reliable (Toyota). It has the 2JZ-GE motor in it (N/A Supra Motor) so it can be built. With little more than a head gasket to the motor itself, with a nice turbo kit and a new clutch these cars can see ~450 RWHP. Granted, that will take the price of the car from about $11-12k up to around $20k, but it wouldn't be done right away. Reliability will go down a bit as with any high powered boosted car, but you can always turn the boost way down for daily driving. Lexus SC300: This is starting to seem like the best option. It would be somewhere between a '92 and a '97 to make sure it was manual. It *might* have a 1JZ-GTE (2.5L turbo Supra motor) or a 2JZ-GTE (3.0L turbo Supra motor) already swapped into it, or it may have a 2JZ-GE already turboed. There is a lot of people who have made these their project cars and now want something new. I can get into a pretty close to fully built car with ~400 RWHP for around $10k. That would leave room for anything that might go wrong and chances are that insurance would be cheaper since it is an older car (even though it is a 2 door coupe and the IS300 is a 4 door sedan). I was a bit worried about miles on the car, but most of these have been well taken care of and have swapped motors and/or transmissions as well. I think my chances would be just as good that something go wrong on a boosted IS300 as an older boosted SC300. Thoughts or other options?? Official yack away thread - motoxer4life - 04-15-2008 Im not sure about the reliability but my cousin has a Subaru Wrx and its nice. Pretty fast too for stock. Official yack away thread - Tex - 04-15-2008 Scooby doo.....WRX Official yack away thread - mikeh - 04-15-2008 You'll shoot your eye out kid! Official yack away thread - mikeh - 04-15-2008 But seriously, I love the SC300 idea! I may have to pick one of those up for myself. Official yack away thread - FreeRideFrosty - 04-15-2008 mikeh Wrote:But seriously, I love the SC300 idea! I may have to pick one of those up for myself. When they are clean they look soooooo good IMO. I'm really leaning towards that I think. The IS300 is probably second choice, but about even with the WRX right now. Official yack away thread - Toughtrax - 04-15-2008 Get the WRX you wont be sorry, I have a 04 that I have put some money into not much but a couple of grand over the years and have put it to its paces. Best car I have ever driven in the winter time even over my 4x4 truck that I had with weight in the bed. Car just sits right now until it is nice outside again to pull her out then I have a new turbo that is going to go on. That should put me right around 365 to 385 HP at the rear wheel I wouldn't even be able to guess what it would be at the front. Here is a list of what I have done. Up Pipe Down Pipe Cobb 2 computer Cat Back exhaust Coil suspension Cold air and a couple of little stuff I want to keep to my self LOL here is a list of stuff to go on this year if the funds are there LOL Biggggggeeeerrr Turbo Big Brakes Headers CF Trunk lid and hood New wheels and Tires Official yack away thread - FreeRideFrosty - 04-15-2008 My thing with the WRX is that to get it to a higher performance level I will need to put at least several thousand into it, including a turbo swap. It would approach the price of having a built IS300. I don't know which I would rather have for the money. The SC300 is definitely the best bang for the buck I think. Official yack away thread - Ponch - 04-15-2008 Official yack away thread - motoxer4life - 04-16-2008 hahaha thats great Official yack away thread - Tex - 04-16-2008 is a 92-93 SC300 going to be reliable? if it's built, what is the maintenance/repairs going to run you? How much have you dumped into your VW for maintenance/repairs? I would go newer (03-04) WRX and leave it close to stock for reliability reasons........ Maybe I'm just getting old...... BTW, Toughtrax's car is BA!!! Official yack away thread - J-Dub - 04-16-2008 WRX All the way. not only does it look cool, It's AWD. Also...Fast and Fuel economy don't coincide. Official yack away thread - FreeRideFrosty - 04-16-2008 Fast and Fuel economy can coincide when you can have boost at about 6 PSI daily driven and then turn it up to 18+ for for having fun.... Official yack away thread - J-Dub - 04-16-2008 True. but you got to have an aftermarket boost-controller, yes? arent those electronics a little pricey. Official yack away thread - PINKY - 04-16-2008 We just took in a 05-06 red WRX at my work it got full exhaust, aft mrkt waste gate and chip 18,000 miles its cool for a 4 cyl, handles great. If a car is getting a full aftermarket turbo kit a boost controller will already be there. If I get an SC300 it will likely be turboed already or have a stock turbo motor swapped in. Reliability wise they are supposed to be incredible, even boosted. I have had little problems with my VW. Electronics (pops bulbs like crazy) terrible gas mileage (attributed to the auto mostly I imagine), and the trans has been crap overall.... :-\ Official yack away thread - J-Dub - 04-16-2008 I figured you were speaking of getting a car that already had a turbo. Official yack away thread - FreeRideFrosty - 04-17-2008 With the WRX that would be the case. For an IS300 it would not be turboed and it would be a while before I could turbo it. For the SC300 it could be not turboed (with the stock 2JZ-GE) or come turboed with a stock swap (1JZ-GTE or 2JZ-GTE, both stock turbo motors) or have a boosted 2JZ-GE. There are really lots of options. Chances are higher that an SC300 would have work done to it though because they are older, cheaper, and several people have made them their project cars. Official yack away thread - J-Dub - 04-17-2008 I'd say go with the subaru. can't really go wrong. They launch like crazy with the AWD, only thing I've heard is the transmissions can't take much more than like 300-350hp and then the output/input shaft is prone to snapping, on the 5 Spd, which im sure you'll get. Rock solid engines though. not to mention a nice turbo already. Official yack away thread - Tex - 04-17-2008 stock WRX, 5.4 sec to 60mph.... |
