I was thinking of getting an ST-R but when I read on the s-grid about a butt load people having problems with there diffs (and dropping tons of money on just diff's) I started second guessing myself. For the guys that have the ST-R are you have the same problems?

Kyosho ST-R - Eracer76 - 08-21-2006

I did have the problem with one of my diffs along with many others, but its not the trucks fault.
The problem is builder error because the instructions were not clear enough on how to shim the diffs properly. The problem is actually the pinion gear meshing with the ring/bevel gear, if left too loose when the gears are new, they will strip out after they break-in
I just shimmed them the way Ive been doing it all my RC years with Savages, LST, LSP and so on, but on the ST-R you need to shim them tighter with no play when new.
There is a bunch of talk on Truggyracers.com about it and the Kyosho rep is on there helping clear up the issues.
Since redoing mine, shimming them tighter, I havent had any problems Smile

Same here. I built mine in a hurry and didnt take the time to shim the diffs correctly. Kyosho came out with an updated diff shimming procedure. I shimmed mine at round 2 and havent had problems since. LSP gears are a drop in from what I read on the grid as well.

Ill probably be getting one tonight....how do you like the truck other wise steering durability,...any other problems ?

Kyosho ST-R - chickenfarmer3 - 08-21-2006

my diffs are cool, but i got my truck after everyone started having issues so it was a known thing to shim them tight, the hot bodies gears are a good fit and solve the problem if it starts. this thing turns awesome, also if the problem of the front unis poping out arises you can put lsp diff cups in they are longer and keep the unis from poping out.

Kyosho ST-R - snakebite46 - 08-21-2006

I put a spacer (shim) between the uni and hub bearing. Seems to hold up pretty good preventing the uni from popping out.

ditto here, put all my hub shims inside between axle and bearing

No problem....
Not much needed to stock up on....Ive been racing mine, box stock, since April and the only thing Ive broken was the wing mount, and it wasnt really broke off, just cracked and bent. I bought an extra front suspension arm and c-hubs when I got the truck and havent needed them.
Im more the happy with the truck and Im sure you will be too Smile
