OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - BAMF90 - 02-05-2007

I've always wanted to stick a .18TZ in my Revo, but everytime I post on different forums, asking what I will need to do it, I never get a straight forward answer. What I want to do is be able to use my rotostart on a .18TZ because I honestly just don't want a starter box. I know that they are better and all that, but they are too much money. What I want to know is, will all these parts work on a .18TZ, and will I be able to drop it right into my Revo, and be able to use a rotostart with it:

O.S. Starting Shaft .18 TM - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=001197348&I=LXHKW0&P=K

Also, I heard something that you have to grind the fins on the bottom of the crankcase off. Is this true? Thanks to those who answer.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Tex - 02-05-2007

I never grinded any fins off my crankcase...

If you really want a roto start then yes, with all the parts you listed you can do it...

and actually it'll make it a true drop in at that point because the crank will be shorter (like a 2.5) more so than a stock tz crank...

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Obsessive R/C - 02-05-2007

Why not just use a TM??

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Tex - 02-05-2007

that's what I would do...TM's are great and have good power....the TZ's are SICK though. Not a good racing motor because of the powerband...they hit so damn hard mid-top

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - rocco79 - 02-05-2007

From what ive seen the tm's are more than enough.... For 2 gallons

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - BAMF90 - 02-05-2007

Thanks Tex for your answer.

I really like the TZ because of the extra power it has over the TM. Plus I want to be different then the other guys. I will most likely getting the TZ for my birthday, which is in March, and slowly will start converting it to fit my Revo.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - BAMF90 - 02-05-2007

Rocco, do they seriously only last 2 gallons? I mean I've heard anywhere from 6-10. Never 2 though. Or were you just exaggerating to say that its a bad motor?

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Czech-it-Out Graphics - 02-05-2007

2 gallons is being optimistic lol

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Casketman - 02-05-2007

Dont pay no attention to dumb and dumber there. Tex knows his stuff so he is the man to listen to with the motor and revo.

I had a TZ in my revo but the crank cracked on me. I guess I could have sent it back to EB mods(which is where it was from) But decided to toss it. SO if your using a EB TZ,chaning out the crank might just kill the reason for a TZ.
Is a TZ needed? Not really if you ask me. Maybe outdoor if the track has some long parts where you can let the motor go. But other then that, you might want the low end push that a TM has.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - BAMF90 - 02-05-2007

Come on! Seriously, how long do they last.

EDIT: Thanks Casketman

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - FreeRideFrosty - 02-05-2007

I have heard of TM's not lasting that long but I know nothing of the TZ's.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Czech-it-Out Graphics - 02-05-2007

ok drew ur right.......

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - rocco79 - 02-05-2007

Dumb and dumber?... i FORGOT , casket is the end all know all of r/c...

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Czech-it-Out Graphics - 02-05-2007

Burn!!!!

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Tex - 02-05-2007

the pull start/rotostart versions last a great deal longer than the bump versions. My pullstart TM lasted well over 4 gallons....My bumpstart TZ only lasted 2 because the bump versions have issues with the conrod rubbing the backplate (even with the rod spacer people came up with).

with the conrod rubbing the backplate, it makes the rear case bearing blow around the 2 gallon mark...

with a rotostart you'll get good life out of the engine although you will have some fun with one-way bearings.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Casketman - 02-05-2007

Never said that did I??

But the one problem I heard when I was running those motors is the crank and con rod are off. RD products sells a spacer to help clean up the 'slop' that was in there. I guess there was enough for the con rod to move around while on the crank and it was rubbing the backplate.

I looked on Tower and the cranks look to be about the same thing between the TM and TZ. The only difference I have heard of are the 3 port vs. 5 port sleeve.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Casketman - 02-05-2007

Just sayin do you two know how to drop a TZ in a revo? No Big Grin

I ment if the motor was a EB mod motor. Buy that then buy a stock TM crank. Kills the reason to buy a EB modded motor. But the TM crank is shorter which makes it basicly a drop-in on the revo.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - BAMF90 - 02-05-2007

Me?

So without the EB Mod and with the TM crank I should still get the same performance out of a TZ that I would with a TZ crank?

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - Casketman - 02-05-2007

No,those two.

I am thinking about a TM motor from EB when I get my next revo. Never felt to easy with those 3.3 motors. Then again,I might just run it till it goes then get the EB. Not sure yet.

OS .18TZ in Revo, few Q's! - BAMF90 - 02-05-2007

But if I were to get a TZ and change out the crank for a TM one, would I still get the same performance that I would with a TZ crank?
