WiFi Network question... - thenewguy821 - 07-04-2005

I am going to be switching my wired Internt connection to a WiFi setup, now that I have the Laptop. What is the best way to do this? In the setup manual for the wireless card, it mentions Infrastructure and Ad-Hoc, Which is better to use?

It also asks about security type. (64-bit WEP, 128-bit WEP, or WPA-PSK) Which of these is the better choice?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I have never worked with a wireless setup before, and I've heard horror stories about people having their wireless network set up wrong, and giving ANYONE with a wireless connection (Six :p: ) complete access to their computer unknowingly...

Head off to the store and pick up a linksys wireless broadband router and you're all set. That's what I have and it works great.

It's got 4 wired ports, the wireless part, and a router all in one package. I run 2 computers in the basement, my xbox, and my tivo on the wired part. My laptop is wireless and speed and connection is great with the linksys.

It has security, although I must admit, I've been too lazy to turn it on. The one I have uses WPA-PSK

So I can camp out in front of your house, and test my pc card on the laptop?... Smile j/k

I got the linksys Wireless-G card (Someone screwed up at Wal-Mart, the Wireless-B cards were on clearance, while looking through the pile, I found a wireless-G) Would I use the Ad-Hoc mode, or infrastructure?

Will that Linksys router block others from connecting to your network?

I know a guy who's been using someone elses internet network for a long time Big Grin

newguy, if you have a linksys wireless-g card, pick up a wireless-g router from linksys. I wouldn't worry about which mode to use. It's all auto setup anyway.

rcdad, yes it will. That's what the security mode is for. A password will be required to log on to receive an IP. No IP no worky. Smile.

linksys g setup is the sh!t. Ive been running it for about a year now and never had a problem with it. And its so easy to setup a password to connect to your network which will stop 99% of the people out there. If ya need any help let me know and maybe i can swing out on a saturday or something and get it going, then go out bashing or something.

I agree dont mess around with anything other than a linksys. Other router can be a nightmare when u want to monkey around with opening ports.

I have a Belkin router and cards for PC and notebook and they have been fine for almost a year. Caught a great rebate deal and they were nearly free! Linksys is top-rated stuff to buy, if you haven't spent all of your money on new rc stuff!
