i have an older traxx rustler and my glow plugs keep goin out...can some one help me out

traxx - Notochord - 08-11-2005

dont you have to get a new one

traxx - DAVEC-NITRO-RS4 - 08-11-2005

What exactly do you mean when you say "keep going out"? How long does a new plug last? What do the elements of the failed plugs look like? What % fuel are you running?

traxx - RCDad - 08-11-2005

What glow plugs are you using?

traxx - Tex - 08-11-2005

what temp is your motor running at?

traxx - Obsessive R/C - 08-11-2005

What color socks are you wearing?

Running lean is usually the culprit for killing glow plugs. Especially if the low speed is too lean. I've done it many times in my early days of nitro rc.

traxx - drfade27 - 08-13-2005

im a virgin with these rc cars so im learning every day(maybe a week into it..and the car was used).Well anyway when i first got the car it wouldnt start,Then a buddy of mine got it started but as soon as i put it on the ground it would shut off..So....................I let my buddy tune it up for me. Relpaced a lot of stuff that was bad on the car and put a new pipe on it.....I was at Bennigens 2 saturadays ago....It ran for a while but got hot in about 15 minutes....Then i couldnt keed it running....Replaced the glow plug twice and was told the glow plug went bad both times.....Went to hobby store yesterday put a fresh glow plug in it, still no luck....SO...........................

traxx - Mr. Tune - 08-13-2005

If it got real hot that fast and started shutting off, I would say it's too lean. Riching it up some, both the hsn and lsn.

traxx - Obsessive R/C - 08-13-2005

LEAN = HOT / RICH = COOL.

Look up the factory needle settings for the engine you have and start there. Factory settings will usually allow for easy starting and are slightly rich. This will give you a good starting point.

Make sure you are using the correct glow plug for your engine also. Don't cheap out on glow plugs, always buy quaility plugs as they are very important.

Any other info you can provide will only help you get the info you need.

Type of fuel: Brand & Nitro %
Glow plug: brand or #
Always make sure there is a trail of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust under acceleration.
If not...richen it up.

traxx - drfade27 - 08-16-2005

ok tried again today, glow plug is ok. but it still wouldnt start. The back wheels turn slow but wouldnt catch.....Is their someone nearby i can have look at this thing......i work in hazelcrest ...Live in Hammond..Let me know thanx

traxx - RCDad - 08-16-2005

Hammond Indiana?

traxx - Tex - 08-16-2005

it's the only Hammond around so.....

If your truck wouldn't start but the back wheels were moving I'd say your clutch is hanging up.

traxx - TowShen - 08-16-2005

actually theres a Hammond in ILL, WI, IN, OH :p:

traxx - drfade27 - 08-16-2005

indiana

traxx - Tex - 08-16-2005

I said "around" Towshen :moon:

traxx - RCDad - 08-17-2005

Well, I live in Hammond, maybe we can get together and perhaps I can help. One thing I'm not understanding is that, it's starting or not starting? I think I read that it was not starting then I think you said the back wheels were turning?

traxx - Tex - 08-17-2005

if the wheels turn as you try to start it the clutch is hanging up. That would need to be fixed before the car runs properly (if it runs at all)

traxx - RCDad - 08-17-2005

Wow, how do the shoes catch on the CB?

traxx - DAVEC-NITRO-RS4 - 08-17-2005

It could be a failed bearing in the bell, locking it to the shaft. But he did say it was moving for a while when they ran in that parking lot? Maybe something got sucked into the clutchbell area and it's jammed in there? If you can't roll it without it trying to turn the engine over, it has to be in the clutch. Unless it's one of those old nitro dragsters that didn't have a clutch.....

traxx - RCDad - 08-17-2005

I think he said it was a nitro rusty

traxx - DAVEC-NITRO-RS4 - 08-17-2005

I know, the dragster thing should have been tagged "jk".

traxx - Tex - 08-17-2005

Either a clutch spring lets loose or a bearing blows out, those are the main two ways a clutch sticks

traxx - RCDad - 08-17-2005

Well, weather.com says thundershowers Saturday so maybe he can bring it by and we'll tear it apart.
