Dual VXL Waterproof 3906 - Krosenqu - 08-14-2009 Working on a little project. I don't know if this has been done but its kind of a fun build for me. The idea is to have a duel vxl (been done lots of times before) but have it be completely waterproof. I have one waterproof system so far. The other is on its way (I used my other vxl system for a mock up). The E-maxx: 3906 converted to 3.3 spec all around (3.3 output shafts, 3.3 knuckles) GPM low CG chassis RPM Front/Rear bumpers Aluminum bulkhead braces (ebay) RPM Front shock tower Steel idler in trans Aluminum Front Rear and Center skid plates Slash waterproof receiver box Waterproof servo is on its way. 1 Waterproof VXL system on its way Here is the mount I'm trying to build. I've ran into a snag though. ESC/Reciever Mounting Location (left) Template (right) The PlexiGlass Mount ready to be cut and drilled: Oh No'es! What will I do?!?!? Countersink much? PROBLEM!!! I Broke the mount because it was too thin!!! Finished Mount with ESC's and Reciever box: All mounted up but I broke it. What will I do? Dual VXL Waterproof 3906 - Krosenqu - 08-14-2009 Yay! Look what came in the mail today! Kudos to McMaster-Carr !!!!!!! I ordered these Tuesday night and they were at my door this afternoon! (Thursday) Come to find out, they are in Elmhurst IL. Right next door to me WooHoo! Yummm. They fit beautifully. Actually they are a little loose but I ordered them a size too big rather than a size too small. They didn't have anything in the "perfect" size So back to making another mount. I found a piece of tinted plexi. Same thickness. Great stuff. 46mm is the distance between the standoffs of the VXL esc's if anybody is curious. It helps when your dad used to do woodworking. Beats having crooked screw holes like I had in the prototype. Instead of drilling and using a Tap-and-die set, I just drilled the holes one size smaller than the threads. I greased the holes and let the screw create the threads. Without the grease, the screw heats up and squeaks horribly. All drilled: Wow! Really nice fit! Remember kids, measure twice and cut once! Here's the peeled plexi I added Dan's body protectors to prevent marring between the spacers and locknut tightening. Shot of the spacers. Darn, there's more overhang than I pictured. Unfortunately, they didnt have any smaller outer diameter spacers. Thats ok, the mount is ROCK SOLID with 3/4" of aluminum holding on. Darn! Nice fit! All installed: Dual VXL Waterproof 3906 - Krosenqu - 08-14-2009 JUST FYI: For those that are curious, the newer VXL system next to the old vxl system (now discontinued I believe?) Notice that the old ESC (TRA3350) uses the built in connectors and the new system (TRA3350X) uses leads. The newer waterproof motor is all one machined piece! There is some kind of rubberish material on the bottom of the screw holes (see second pic) so no water gets in. The endbell must be sealed too. |
