Local Teen driver gets pulled over at 142

Eracer76 Wrote:You got me by 1 mph....only because I backed out of it at 174mph due to things flying by much faster then my liking!
The scary thing is.....I was in my modded Crossfire SRT-6 and it was still pulling hard, as if I was still doing 110mph
Man I love this car!

BTW...how do you know a Neon hits 135mph when the speedo only goes to 120mph? Not to mention it takes about 5 miles of road to get it up there LOL
I had a bone stock Neon once too....but now its heavily modded (ported & polished head w/aftermarket cam just to name some) and it still takes forever to get going 120mph

It takes a really long time for a neon to get up that high!!! And the reason I knew it was that fast is I was chasing down my buddies car on 355 and he was limited to 130 and I passed him(after a couple of miles) so it gave me a rough estimate.

I know you most of the old guys are tired of seeing these pics, but I thought it was fitting.

My old Kaws went pretty fast. The LTD1000 broke 140 on the speedo, and the GPz1100 only had an 85mph speedo, but I know it was going way faster than that Big Grin

Anybody remember that one guy in Minnesota who got a speeding ticket for doing 205mph on an RC51?

The best phrase I can think of is, "You can't outrun a motorola." Blues Brothers rulesConfusedalute:

Speeding on public roads? Sure, every day on the highway. 355 by moves about 75 to 85mph consistantly if the roads are dry. North on rt 12 its about 70 to 75 (2ln rural highway).

I've gone almost triple the 55mph limit. Lucky me I wasn't pulled over. was on a 4ln highway.

It doesn't take much to hit 140mph. In your average car thats about 210 to 230hp, some cars will hit 150+ if they are aerodynamic enough. In the late 80's that might have been a problem, but now? Easy as pie, most sport compacts are making roughly 200hp or more. So I can see it easy.

Horsepower isnt really the determening factor ... Gearing is what gives you speed. Just cuz you have 230 hp doesnt mean you can hit 140mph....

I have around 400hp and i know that the car cant hit much more than 155-165 due to transmission and rear end gearing

I disagree, HP is ONE of the the determining factors in top speed. The 3 main factors are Power, Aerodynamics and gearing. All 3 are important for without 1 of them you can't hit a specified speed.

Lets take the Nissan Maxima. It has 260hp, and can do about 150mph.
Dodge SRT-4, 250hp, it does 150+.
My TransAm came stock with 235hp in 1989. It can do 150mph+
Honda Accord with 244hp, is capable of 150mph.

Basically if its decently aerodynamic, a sedan, and has 230+ then its going to reach 140mph without difficulty.

One of the notable exceptions is the new Civic-R, it tops out at 135mph or so, but its limited by gearing, not power. And its under 200hp.

Common misconception, Weight is not a substantial factor in top speed. It is in acceleration, but not top speed. More weight simply means free down force. Ask the bonneville salt flat racers. They add weight for stability.

If a car has a terminal speed of 200mph, and you drop 500lbs off of it, then its going to hit that 200mph faster, but it will still top out at 200mph. It may achieve 201mph, but the gains will be so small as to be unmeasurable. However, take that same car and remove the side mirrors, and you'll gain speed more easily because of the decrease in the Coefficient of drag.

I went 122-123mph for 1 hour straight in my Jetta from STL to Chi on I55 with a Jeep and a Galant .....train style....that was weird

I went 143mph in a '83 280z turbo, digital dash didn't lie....we flew past a probe GT that was topped at 120mph (governed)..... I was laying in the hatch back of the 280z...............stupid kids

First of all those are advertised horsepowers(just to clear things up!!!) Horsepower and torque determine how fast you get up to speed. Gearing and aerodynamics determine the rest!!!! In drag racing you are not trying to get to top speed you are only trying to go as fast as possible in the shortest amount of time. Therefore they want as much horespower and torque as possible. A 67 VW beetle could possibly do 200 mph with a stock motor as long as the trans allowed it and the length of the straight. Salt flat cars are a good example here, they NEED all of the space they can get to reach top speed because of the gearing(jet cars are excluded from this completely different system lol) horsepower has something to do with it yes but not nearly as much as gearing.

A VW will do that speed. I worked as a tech for Audi/ VW for a few years. About 4 years go i worked at a dealer down south for a while. After any repairs i made i was to take the vehicle on a test drive to verify the complaint was repaired. Well when the Phatons came out i took one for a test drive. I used to go just out side of town to where there is a road that runs parallel to I55. I used to see how fast i could get the cars i was test driving (usually vw,audi, benz,or subaru's) before i came to the last stretch of road that was visible by I55. I got that dub up to 155 before it cut out.
If at first you dont succeed, suck another seed!

German and euro cars are made for that kind of speed... They are more engineered for prolonged high speed jaunts...

Never gave up, I just never use it. I know a guy that wants to open up a speed shop so I'll probably end up working there.

HP plays a huge part in top speed. Its not all about gearing and aero. Its about matching the gearing and power to the drag of the car moving through the air and distance you have to reach top speed.

example.. 2 identical cars both geared to have a top speed in theory of 250mph with an unlimited distance to run with the same weight and drag coefficient but one has a 50hp engine the other has a 500hp engine.. I got my money on the 500hp car to reach a much higher top speed. The 50hp car will simply run out of power to keep working against the increasing drag from the air.

I am actually quite surprised how stable the GTI is abover 100. I have been over 100 in a few of my friends cars and they start feeling sketchy. This thing just seems to lower down almost and beg for more. Pleasant surprise.
