Here is where i have my temp thing at. I have it facing away from the header, so no extra heat can throw it off...

I solved it. It's a maxx. If that motor were in a revo it would run perfect and then just blow up randomly. Mine didn't spend any time jerkin' me around. :-D j/k

I agree. Grey and distorted sounds lean. It is hard to tell, completely, since the engine hasn't JUST been run, so it being dry really doesn't tell much. I would assume that if it was too rich, the plug would still be oily, but it may have dried.
Isn't pitting caused by detonation? (Lack of shims, TOO high Nitro content, etc.)

Believe it or not, it is actually more acurate with the sensor located above the Exhaust port. It get's it's readig from the contact point and isn't really affected by the header (as long as it isn't touching the header)

Yes pitting is caused detonation. too high nitro content with too small of a combustion chamber

the pitting can be caused by lean settings or low deck height

Funny I would mention the TOO high Nitro. Everyone thinks I'm crazy for running 40%. I tried adding a shim, and it didn't run as good.

i check for the macro thing, and my camera does have it, but for some reason when the light hits the metal it makes it blurry , i'm not sure why

Yeah.... I don't think it's too hig of nitro content here. I am going to go with the fact that that sensor isn't off by that much and it has been run lean for some time now. If it were rich, even if it hadn't run in a week or so, the plug would still be oily. That isn't the case. My vote.... Lean.

It's focusing on the flash. Turn off the flash, and hold the plug under a regular light. Also, don't hold the camera too close. Turn on the Macro setting, and use the Zoom to get the close up.

well, i appreciate teh help everyone. But form what i ahve read, i'm not really sure what to think. Everyone has thier own opinion. Tomorrow i will try to re-tune from scratch and see what happens.

It's all good man. You have to learn somewhere. Like I said..... good smoke at idle and on throttle. You want it to take off, off of the line without stuttering and you don't want it to bog out up high. If it stutters off the line you could be flooding it or starving it, hard to tell. If you are boggin high end you are most likely lean then. Good luck.

Start at factory settings. Since it is already broke-in, you can start tuning right away. Start tuning ONLY on the High speed needle. Only make amall adjustments (1/10 turn at a time). Give a couple passes at full throttle, to clear the engine and see how it is reacting. Watch for a steadt trail of smoke. It will be faint, but as long as there is smoke, it is good. Each time you turn the HSN, you should notice a slight increase in performance. When the engine seems to be shifting into 2nd gear in 10-15 feet, you are probably in a close range. Keep an eye on the temps also. If you have a friend that has a handheld temp gun, check with that as well, and see if your on-board guage is reading acurate.
After the HSN is tuned, you can start to tune the Low Speed Needle. A good starting point for the LSN, is to make a couple full speed passes to clear out the carb. When you pull the truck in, let it idle for a couple seconds, then pinch the fuel line about 1" from the carb inlet. The RPM's should rise slightly, and the engine should die in 3-4 seconds. If it takes 5 seconds or longer, it is a bit too Rich on the LSN. If it dies in 2 seconds or less, it is too lean. Once you get the LSN in that range, you should be pretty close. Start the truck again, and make a few full throttle passes, to make sure it is cleared out, then bring the truck to a stop. Let it idle for 5-10 seconds. It should idle fine for this length of time. Then give it full throttle. the truck should take off pretty quick. If it sputters as it tries to accelerate, then starts to go, or sputters and dies at idle in the 5-10 seconds, slightly lean the LSN (1/10 turn at a time). If the RPM's start to rise and the truck dies out at idle in the 5-10 seconds, it is too lean on the LSN. If it won't idle at all, slightly raise your idle speed, till it will idle, but not high enough to move the truck. Good luck.

well i would, but i got alot going on tomorrow. Plus i live like 2 or more hours away from that track. I'm gonna try and get up ther esometime though, sounds like alot of fun. Plus you guys wanna keep me away from there anyways. Youi may never see a first place again. late
