This is what the piston on my OS.18TM looks like after 1.5 gallons of Byrons 30% through it. Not bad at all, never ran above 240, never ran below 210. Sorry the pics are blurry, bad lighting

oh and about the piston color, that was running lean aka too hot. dark brown (or better yet, light brown) is the color a piston should be after running at a good temp. (the piston will be green if you run Blue Thunder)
Black piston means= too hot. A grey, dry glow plug= too hot.
If it walks like a duck..............

Me too mike.... ( only my 528 gets hot and its still brown)
I had a modded Nova bs21sb and i ran it lean and the head was clean and pitted... OSrocket said it had be run lean thats what caused the head to pit... Because the engine was shimmed correctly

I should take a pic of my 3.3 piston after 2+ gallons, it has a nice brown C on it and is not black whatsoever.
Get more opinions Mikey, trust me...ask on the grid.

I know rich is a journeyman auto mechanic so i know he knows way more about what im about to touch on, but here goes...
When i was in school to be an auto mechanic,we were taught build up like that was seen in in buicks/cadilliacs ect... (any cars thats never really driven hard)
Thats carbon build up... A by-product of combustion... We were taught it occured due to the the engine never really reaching operating tempatures (old person style driving) or to rich mixtures... (Or both)
In 1:1 cars build up could actully change the compression ratio of the car and cause knocking. It had to be bead blasted off with a walnut shell agragate (sp?)
Thast why to me, it looks rich. I know im comparing a mini 2 stroke to a large 4 cycle... But all they both really are is air pumps.... So the prinicpals are the same..
Just my .02 not tryin to be a jerk

Well, i decided to tune the motor all over agin. When i changed my spur gear last time, i never re-tuned it, and i should have. Cause now the thing runs even better than what it did. And the temps were around 270 today, and the heat index was liek 105. So thats not bad. I just think the tunning was all out of wack, cause where i have the needkles set now, are way different from where they were. But as soon as i got it tuned in really nice , i hit a damn pole, and busted up alot of stuff. Time to upgrade i guess. later

At least the engine was running better... Glad to hear that.
Looks like you are living up to your screen name... Luckily, the maxx is fairly easy to work on.
