which temp gun to buy?
#1
my current Raytech temp gun took a crap a coulple weeks ago. actualy the trigger broke. so i figured get a new one for back up use till i find a replacement trigger.thats if i can even get a new trigger, havent found one yet.
I spent about $90 on the Raytech and see alot of other brands for alot less. usaly around $35 to $50.

The ? is which brands are reliable and recomended?

hpi,duratraxx,any others?

Dont buy any. Tune by performance and smoke. If you do that your probly going to have the same life span but also a lot less of a headache trying to keep it in a certain temp range. Just make sure theres always smoke comming out the exhaust and you'll be fine. Way to many people get addicted to temping there motors every 5 minutes or so.

I picked up the one that HPI sells, I have a sneaking suspiciion that it's probably the same as duratrax one, but with the HPI label and a bit bigger price tag...

Don't worry, I have that one and so does Traxxas Thrasher and Sh1nn3r. It's good and works fine for the price lol. I've had mine about a year and replaced the battery once.

ya i know about temping for performance and all, just like to make shure it doesn't hit too high of a temp. We spend too much mony on theis motors to take a chance on over heating them to self destruct.

i like it. you can get it down in the cooling head so you have less of a chance of a mis-read.

I had the Raytek and the Blue duratrax one.
Between the two using them at the same time I get a variance of about 10-15 degrees between the two.

My neighbor and I kept checking and checking and came up with that.
The Raytek is more accurate than the Duratrax one.

There is one made by Craftsman like Lance uses. They have a grey colored one and it is suppose to be better than the Raytek because it can adjust due to the coatings on the heads, black, blue, purple and chrome heads.
It has something to do with the heat being deflected with different colors.
You will find it in the tools and auto area.
Worth checking but I dunno how much they cost.
Some Mechanics use them.

For You Gary---spend the $250 on the Exergen one since you blow your motors and the ones that are loaned to ya----LMAO---LOL
Sorry had to tease you about that.

brian some how i just knew you would bring that up. lol

anyway, basicly what i'm getting here is with all of the diferent temp guns they are all basicly the same. all of which are close to what actual temp is. wether it is a gun or on board.
so would it be safe to say that as long as you tune for performane and smoke that any temp device would keep you safe from extrem over heating.

I just read a very good article in XRC or RCCA (can't recall which) about tuning by the color and appearance of the inside of the head. True, you have to pull the head off to get an accurate read, but that's pretty minor task for an RC guy.

FireSprink is right that you can get the Axial temp gun in a better position on the cooling head for a more accurate reading. We also have the Duratrax, Atomik, PMI, and Raytek. We also have on-board sensors from Traxxas, and Venom. Venom also has the Temp sensor Failsafe combo called the Smart Temp.
