Actually, its only the 2nd movie where they went nuts with the CG. The first movie is nearly all real.
The Eclipse scene in the parking lot was the Eclipse body attached to a small truck rack, so they could film the spin from outside the car.
Most of the races were real footage, using camera tricks to give the illusion of speed. The Supra/Ferrari race is pretty much real, you don't get that kind of body roll without being at speed. Don't know the actual speeds but they were fast enough that a crash would have been a very bad thing.
The end drag with the Charger/Supra was fake, specially the wheelie scene. Though jumping in front of the train was realistic, but fake. Its 2 shots that were imposed on each other. Basically they filmed the jump, then they did a 2nd shot where the train passes by the combined them digitally. The scene where the charger hits the semi and flips is real, they used a single pipe ramp and it really did hit hard and flip. Again they digitally imposed the Supra under the charger when its flipping though.
F&F 2 is very fake. Nearly the entire first race is CG, and it looks CG too.
As far as the drifting in F&F3, I think its real on the streets with some cars added digitally in after effects. They did the same in Matrix 2 on the freeway chase scene. The cars closest to the actors were added digitally to minimize risk.
Of the 3, I like the first movie the most. Its got the most real footage of all 3.
