the story was when I was in... if you were a russian sub sailor, when you completed your first deployment, you'd pretty much be sterile because of the lack of radiological controls.. they just got too much radiation, life expectancey wasn't good.. and I guess it got worse with the collapse of the USSR.
but, their technology (submarines is all I know) was some pretty good stuff, the typhoon class came out and there wasn't any intel gathered for quite some time, we couldn't find her... their propulsion systems were nice and quiet.. a lot of stuff was so quiet that it could be easily masked by biologics or surface craft.. cool stuff.. we had this of course, but it was a constant battle of submarine technology, they went as far starting to rubber coat the hulls of our boats to make it look like what it wasn't... the cold war era was very cool to play submariner in
I'm not sure on the Akula speed, I know that we could break 30+ knots, but everyone hid what the boat could actually do.. so no one really knows, I do know that if you were on station and tracked the akula it was a nice prize.. they were hard to find and hard to track and any intel was sought after..
it's not the fastest sub.. there's one up in Kittery, ME that was the fastest US, they claim 50+ knots but beyond that it's still classified 30 yrs or so later, I'll remember her name in a few minutes and edit the thread..
oh, it was the Albacore.. very cramped, but impressive...
