It's not so much "Knowing" that someone has a gun that deters the would be attacker, it is NOT Knowing who is armed that stops the would be attacker.
If the attacker KNOWS who is armed and who is unarmed, they will just stalk their intended victim untill there is nobody else around. By NOT knowing who is armed, it makes it much harder to pick a victim. THIS is why concealed carry is a better alternative to open carry.
