How about the fact that most are owned by teenagers who cant afford the true speed hop ups so they settle for things that give them the look and sound of performance. Im in NO WAY a fan of rice, but C'mon due we all dont have thousands to dump into a late 80's auto. Just kinda smug man... The kid just got his 1st car and ya jump his shit..... Im sure at 18 years old you had a built and stroked muscle car right?
I'm not saying he picked the wrong car and that he should have gotten muscle. I didn't say anything like that. As for my first car?
No, had a 93' Escort I picked up cheap and drove till I retired it. All the while savings for what i wanted. It was cheap, reliable, good fuel economy, and the only part I ever replaced on it was the radiator after it sprung a leak. I still have that car, its served me well for over 10 years. Even now its still around as a loaner for friends, family or myself if I need it. Most likely will be donating it to charity as I don't really need 3 cars anymore and the body is rusting out. But I would still drive it to California if I needed to get there. Though if gas goes up I may keep it as it gets about 32mpg around town. I haven't modded it, though I have drag raced it. 19.1@ 71mph, 88hp stock, still stock now with over 160k on the clock.
Now I drive a 99' Kia Sephia 4dr that i picked up. Gets good gas milage, roomy enough for long trips, nice A/C, good heat, cheap to maintain cheap to drive, cheaper to insure.
The TransAm is a toy, if I break something I'm not out of a ride, and it'll still be there when rebuild as i want it. I wanted a GTA and waited 5 years to get it while I did other things. WhenI bought it it had no engine, no transmission, the wiring harness was a mess.... I bought it as a project to rebuild.
The autozoo bullet/fart can mufflers don't increase horsepower, just noise. The major restriction in the exhaust system is the piping aft of the cat itself. All it does is make noise with no real increase in power. A true cat-back would give a boost in power and fuel economy. One step further is a header and high flow cat. Add a cold air intake and you have a car that sounds only slightly louder than stock but has a significant gain in the seat of the pants. And no, I can't stand hearing a crappy TBI V8 with a loud ass flowmaster either or straight exhaust, no point in it. Exhaust gas cools the further it gets from the exhaust port, as it cools it loses volume and becomes denser so a smaller pipe is needed to keep the velocity up, using a larger tip just makes it louder.
A fart can on the back is as much cosmetic as anything else, wasted money where performance is concerned.
