Something I wrote about a year ago.
"The Strange Thrill of it all"
Its come to this. It was bound to happen more sooner than later
and the chaos has spread through-out the other threads. It seems the
rigors of racing have taken its toll and we all start to realize the
grim reality of this great hobby.
Upon building and finishing that $700 kit and installing all the
other top notch go fast equipment, that $1500 machine is now a piece of
gear-head art. A thing of beauty that only a RC racer could understand.
My, how'd id love to just leave it on a shelf for all to admire, but
thats not what its meant for. "No, no, no, I have better things in mind
for you...my precious." what we say to our cars in Gollum's voice. Our
hobby is a waste of time and money to a hater or normal human being. It
just doesn't register why someone would want to spend the time and
dollars on something thats just going to get dirty and beat-up like the
nerds in high school. Dont even try to explain the concept, take them
and show 'em the arena where we do battle with these so-called toy
cars.
Yes, the Arena (track). Where us Gladiators do battle. This is
what it all comes down to. This is what we have prepared for. All the
hours of preparation, all the gallons of practice, all the time and
money getting ready for this moment. Chassis tunning, shock tuning,
carb tuning, tire selection, tire compounds, tire modifications, shock
oil, Diff fluids, clutch tuning, Gearing.......all that happy shit. No
matter how much time you work on your car, Gremlins seem to find there
way in and ruin your day. Although this doesn't always happen, it
happens from time to time. Almost always at the worst time, mind you.
Nothing can prepare you for failure when failure is not
one of your options. This is why it is always smart to "Learn to enjoy
losing" and just be prepared for failure, because nobody is perfect and
no two drivers are the same. Blown diffs, blown shocks, blown clutch
bearings, blown clutch springs, blown shock bladder, tires coming off
the rims(sanders)....all kinds of shit can go wrong. Maybe it was
something that was over looked, something took-for-granted, Forgotten
maybe. Never the less, somethings are just out of your control and just
happen.
This hobby is no picnic and can be down right evil. Evil
enough to make some racers walk away from competing and sell all there
rc car racing stuff and go fly a kite or some-other thing with wings.
Sissy. Never give up, this is racing. Racing is supposed to be fun. Sometimes
fun is darn right overrated and tempers flare within the mind. The Darkside of this hobby can be very unforgiving and take a toll on your emotions. Its not uncommon
to hear arguing in the pits and someone mumbling the words: "Ill give that hack the
wheel next time." It's a dirty part of racing but it happens, not just in RC either, all
racing. Getting along with one another is a test in itself, but it is very needed in order to have the perfect RC experience. "Cant we all just get along?" Someday
maybe.
When the flag drops the race begins. Having a good race doesn't
always count on you , it counts on others as well. Some jackass giving
you the wheel weather intentional or not, can be reason enough for
retaliation and an all out war. No holds barred kind of shit. Getting
ugly on a race track is very common and sometimes gets out of hand.
Make no mistake about it, that hand you shook in the Pits, will later
be the one that can take you out on the drivers stand. A fist fight
with RC cars. A battle to the death, how much abuse can that toy take
before it throws in the towel and limps home to pit-lane and then go
through verbal abuse all the way to your pit table. Remember that $300
remote is not a hammer.
RC Racing can be a brutal hobby. So many things can go wrong.
All the Bull-shit and drama are regretfully part of it. Its a never
ending soap-opera filled with the desire to win at any cost, no matter
what the out come. Its a place where men can be men and 10 feet up the
drivers stand a man can be a baby and its almost understandable. The
things that we must do in order to enjoy the strange thrill of it all
is by no means enjoyable and in most cases down right crazy, but
sometimes it all works out. Sometimes..........but there is also a negative
side too......
