That's what I have been saying. The Sox ownership saw that the fans were not happy with the way the team was playing, and finally realized that they had to spend money to make money... J/K Tommy, I know this wasn't your point, but it makes sense.
Even the Cubs announcers commented on the major differences between the Sox and Cubs. The 2 biggest being:
The Cubs roster has 9 decent starters, but little backup. If someone gets hurt, it hurts the team, because their Bench isn't strong enough. The Sox have a strong enough bench, that if someone gets hurt, their replacement can benefit the team as well.
Another point they made, is about both teams "Hustle". On a "Routine" base hit, the Cubs Trot to the base, the Sox run hard to base. They show a little more aggressiveness on the "routine" plays, which can force an error.
These are points made by Cubs announcers.
