IMO.... if you run 1/10 gas truck, like the AE GT, it will make you a better driver. It is a smaller class but still a lot of fun and fairly cheap to get into. They are fairly inexpensive to upgrade, and can be plenty of fun on or off road around the house.
Monster truck (like the Revo) is another fun class. They are IMO the most fun to bash around with and although the race class is filled with a lot of new racers, it can still be fun. It will however, not really make you a better driver as you can generally plow through a lot of stuff.
1/8 scale buggy or truggy unlimited, are going to be the two most competative classes (1/8 even more than truggy). These are the most expensive, the fastest, and generally take to vehicle tuning the best. You need to be precise in your driving to do well in these classes. I loved them because they were so hard, fast, and competative. If you can afford a truggy, I think it is kind of the best of all worlds.
I am not a big a fan of on-road because they can ONLY be used on-road where an off-road can be driven on-road. 1/10 will be an easier, and slower class while the 1/8 is probably the most expensive class of RC racing. It is very fast, very competative, and again, very expensive.
