I was into the website stuff before this place. I already had one site going already, but that project has since failed. I think its downfall was that it wasn't targeted enough to a certain type of audience.
Fastforward 1 year and 2 friends of mine had told me to make an rc site dedicated for chicago. They said I'd be the only one, and as big as chicago and the surrounding area is, the target audience potention would be huge. At the time, I was only in the hobby for a few months. So we split the startup cost 3 ways and 2 weeks later, (6/4/04) chitownrc.com was born. I got lucky enough that the first new members were very talkative and helped spread the word. The site started up a little slow in the beginning but ended up taking off like a mofo almost overnight. I have never paid for advertising for this site. It has all been word of mouth .
I remember going to berwyn for the first time and there were about 8 guys back there bashing it up on saturday mornings. I knew that this site was a success and had lots of influence and exposure when we setup a end of summer bash in oct 05. We plastered it all over the site and promoted it on the homepage. We had 50+ people and tons of rc's show up for the bbq/bash. It was the biggest turnout ever for berwyn. Not bad for only being open for a little over 1 year.
