Sony makes excellent video cameras, and zeiss lenses are incredible. I am not crazy about the DVD recording however. 3" discs are pretty small. Tape has been the standard for many years and has excellent R&D behind it. I'm sure quality wont suffer much with a 3" disc. I wouldn't use it as an external DVD burner either as it says it can be used as, you'll shorten the life of the camera. Discs are more prone to damage as well. I would go with tape, you'll get longer run times and you'll have greater picture fidelity. Other than just that issue it looks like a good camera. On sonys site the have a pdf on the specs. The list run times as: High quality 20mins, standard quality 30 mins and long play (which is high compression) 60 mins.

I have a Sony Hi8 now, I thought the DVD would be better and last longer. But maybe I will just buy a DVD burner for my PC and covert the HI8 to DVD.
Would that be the best option in your opinion

George, I have a hi8 sony too. I love it! Mine has a 1394 connection, so transfering to my pc is fast an easy.

Ok, I guess I will keep my camera, but I need to buy a DVD burner. My HP OC doesnt have it, so do I get an internal or external and any suggestions of models. Also will I need any software to do this.
I would like to get this done, so when my baby comes I have it all figured out and sont lose that special shot.

Does your computer have firewire? If it does, you could get an external burner and it would be hot swappable( you can plug and unplug it with restating the computer). For burners I really like TDK and I just got an LG 16x DVD-R+R/RW,Dual layer burner which seems pretty good. Does your Hi8 camera have firewire? If it does you can upload to your comp direct from the camera. Software is a toughy for me to answer cause all of my work is done on Macs and has been for a long time, so I dont know alot about whats good for PCs software wise. Maybe something from ULEAD, Pinnacle, and Adobe has Premiere elements, which is easier to use than pro but there is still a learning curve.

firewire is another port on the computer. It only comes on newer computers tho.

Firewire is IEEE 1394. My computer is only 2 1/2 years old and it didn't have it. I bought a card and added it myself. It wasn't expensive and it works well.

HPa330n Is my computer model number and its about 2 years old or so.
A gray wire came with my camercorder, it looks like a a usb plug on one end and then a plug to go into the camera on the other

cemeb4dk: your model does not come with firewire, but you have 3 PCI slots available so you can pick up a firewire PCI card for cheap and install yourself. The grey cable is indeed your USB cable. Firewire transfer info at a higher speeds compaired to USB and USB2 and is on everything now a days from IPODs to Digital cameras.

True a new camera would net you firewire and a pci card w/ firewire interface would allow you to upload the data. Just bring your cameras tomorrow. I'll figure out how to get you setup.

Thanks for the help. I unfortunately will not be at the bash, I work every other weekend, and this is my weekend to work.
SO know I am really lost. LOL
So I can use the USB port instead of the firewire. Obviously its slower, but if its just a matter of minutes I am not to worried about it. But if we are talking dial up vs cable speeds then I will get one.
I just need someone to tell me what exactly to get.

naw dude usb is fine. It would be even better if it was usb 2.0 tho. usb 2.0 just plain rocks.

No problem at all, plain old usb is roughly 12 mbps or 1 megabyte per second, usb 2.0 is about 40 times faster at 480 megabits per second which is roughly 50 Megabytes per second. This is on par with firewire. So in the case of uploading video the wait is considerably longer with regular usb.
USB 2.0 or firewire will upload much faster and with less dropouts.

I got a sony hi8 handycam, but have problems with capturing video..
I used the usb cable, but what's a decent program to capture with? I believe I used powerVCR to do it last time, but if I try and capture 30min+, the audio goes out of sync.. I know it's because there's so many codec options.. but mpeg,wmv,avi, all went out of sync, some more than others.. help

On a PC I am not sure as I am a Mac user. But try here and take a look at their products. Pinnacle is a good company and have been around a long time.

that's for firewire though.. I've got Studio8, but it wouldn't recognize my cam hooked up w/ USB.. I've got a tv tuner, that'd work, but it's a cheap tvwonder LE, and audio is mono only..
all the programs I've tried w/ USB, (powervcr, wmm, ect) the audio goes out of sync if I capture for too long =\

Drop out is cause by a slow up load, but more importantly by a slow hard drive. It is recommended that you use a drive that is not slower than 7200RPM Platter speed. 5400RPM drives(usually standard fair on PCs) are to slow to upload for extended periods of time.

Have you tried movie maker from windows XP, it comes standard with the XP operating system. Some with Hi8's are having luck with it.
