Austrians don't like the word "plastic". They can't charge $570 for something made out of it. Polymer sounds like it should cost more. Those pistols haven't gone up much. Mine was $439 in 1994.

They've got some vids on the .50 sniper here on this website dedicated on banning the .50!!

Mine was $439 in 1994. More on Nylon 6 from "The Glock FAQ": "What is the Glock frame made of? The Glock frame is made out of a high-tech plastic polymer called nylon 6. Exactly what that means, I don't know. But our resident engineer [MarkCO] was kind enough to provide some explanation: Commerical price for hi-grade Nylon 6 is about $3.50/lb. Commerical price for hi-carbon steel is about $1.50/lb. Sounds to me like the Glock is actually a better buy. Anyway, I did a little research and got a smattering of information on the Glock plastic "formula". One source says "more highly guarded than the Coke formula". From 3 human and 5 technical sources, Glock uses an out-sourced proprietary hybrid polymer mix with a base of Nylon 6. The frames are cast and offer high strength, wear resistance, abrasion resistance, and good resiliency, good ductility and toughness. Fracture mechanics are excellent with defect ratios below 1. Do not compare to extruded Nylons because it is different. Casting prices range from $3-$50/pound depending on process and intricacy. The Glock is considered highly-intricate due to imbedded metallic components. Offers long term performance at elevated and depressed temperatures. Chemically stable in a majority of environments, attacked directly by strong acids and bases (better than steel actually). UV exposure results in degradation over an extended period of time. 2-3% carbon black virtually eliminates UV degradation and Carbon-Black does not become readily absorbed in Nylons offering higly increased useful life spans. Loss of mechanical properties with 2% Carbon-Black is less than 0.05% on an elevated UV exposure test equivalent to approximately 100 years. Hyrdolytically attacked by water in excess of 120 degrees. Basically, no hot-tubbing with your Glock and you will be fine. Tupperware is not made from Nylon BTW. Hope this answered some questions. Good Shooting, MarkCO"

I personally don't need one for protection so that's a non issue for me. I have had cheap hand held crossbows that we used for target practice. That was fun. But I think the blow guns would really be different. I actually thought of turning it into a bar game. Taking darts to the next level. Then I realized drunks and blow darts are a bad idea...

Now I want one too!! $2300 on the internet?
Weapon of choice for terrorists? Remember 9-11? They should be banning box cutters! Which by the truthful way, was the terrorists weapon of choice on 9-11. Hogwash. Tell the truth and stop trying to scare people into voting for your agenda.

You get a live trap, like a Hav A Hart, and bait it with cat food, I prefer Little Friskies or Fancy Feast. It like kitty crack. They can't help it. Cats enter the trap for the bait and WHAM, they're locked in. Then I take the trap to the woods and use the 12ga shotgun to blow 'em apart while they're still in the trap. That's why it's called trapshooting.
No, really, it's a clay target sport. Google it or come out to the Naperville Sportsmans Club Thursdays or Sundays and give it a try! It's addictive. You shoot at 25 targets from 5 "stations". 25 is a perfect score and it's tought to master. And no way are you off topic; we're talking guns here, son!

Trapshooting is fun as hell too. It's my summer gun sport. 5 guys, 5 shotguns, 500 rounds, and 5 box of clays, follow by some hot wings at buffalo wild wings. Good times .

Fun and frustrating at the same time.
Where do you shoot at, Tune?

I bought a H&K USP .45 and about a year later, I picked up the G17. I ended up trading the USP in towards my AR15; the Glock was that good. Simple, light, accurate, mega-reliable!
MrTune, when you get it, you really should pick up the 3.5 pound connector and the extended slide release. If you're going to be shooting paper, you may get the reduced-power firing pin spring; but only if you never plan on carrying it a lot. You will undoubtedly get some mother's metal polish and and shine up the cruciform, disconnector, etc. to make that trigger smooooth. Stay away from gimmics like the backstop plug, glock pants clip, etc. Oh, don't forget the Trijicon or Meprolight night sites, they have little tritium filled tubes that glow all by themselves for about 12 years. A necessity for home defence, shooting in the dark (at bad guys)

My buddy is picking up a slightly modified G17C. It has an extended slide release which looks much nicer than the stocker. Is that something that a gunsmith should do? Or is it pretty straight forward and safe install for a newb like myself?

You'd be able to do all the things I mentioned by yourself. You may want to have a smith install the night sites for you as the specific tool to do it is around 100 bucks.
