So how is the new Joliet facility?
#1
Hello all, long time, yadda yadda, anyway...

Just happened to see the news on the LHR website. I'm sure a bunch of you have been there already. I was thinking of taking my truggy out there this coming weekend and wanted to know what to expect, what I should/should not bring etc.

I'm guessing the indoor track is where everyone is going. Do they have starter boxes available like at the old track? What about ignitors?

I'm just planning to go for some practice and see what its like, I'm imagining there is no reason to bring canopy, chairs, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

No starter boxes available and bring your own ignitor. No need for a canopy since its indoor and bringing your own chair is a good idea since they are short on chairs at the time being.

RCdad, good to hear from you again! Truggy now! Cool. Truggy class looks to be the way most guys are going. I hope that means I'll have it easier in MT Sportsman!

The new indoor track is nice. You can read about 3000 posts here about it.

Bernie says they will be installing carpet indoors for mini's, and that the outdoor asphalt on road will be put down in the spring-summer. I look forward to onroad Big Grin. Are you still an onroad owner?

I'm buildng up another Super Nitro but I was thinking of racing out in Merrillville from May to Sep. What do they have at LHR for onroad now? Only indoor I imagine.

A lot of people usually doesn't bother me, I just get in everyone's way most of the time Big Grin

So what is the setup like, do you have a place to setup your own starter box? Do they have someplace to plug in for AC?

I'd like to bring as little as possible the first time just to see what the new track is like. I may just use the recoil start and bring a few items (like a hair dryer) in case I have problems getting it started. Basically, fuel, ignitor and a truck.

I'm kind of shocked they don't have the starter box available like the old track, that was really nice.

Here is my truggy and my super nitro project;

bring everything you need to get yourself running as if this was a bash session. All the track provides is electric, tables, and a track at the moment. In the near future they will have an indoor hobby shop and food. Bring whatever gets you running.

Welcome back RCDad! Imagine the old track, but bigger and better. They supply tables, electric, and chairs. A hobby shop and food are in the works. Until the food is setup, I recommend bringing your own. Aint nothing worse than going hungry at the track and there's no where close by to go get food from.

They have food, Tune. They make pizzas for $7 each...Most of the time they'll have supreme, cheese, pepperoni, and sausage...

Thanks all for the welcome.

The old track didn't have a starter box? Maybe it was someone's sitting there that I saw. I was only there once.

Well I'll bring a starterbox then just in case I have problems getting it started. That truggy flies by the way, has a HB .26 engine. I've been kicking up rooster tails of snow with it this winter.

I don't remember the old track having food so I guess that's an upgrade. I think the price for practice is about the same.

How's the ventilation? What about noise? I bought earplugs for the kids because the old track was so loud when you got a few big blocks running through there.

Deafening. Bring ear plugs for sure!
Fumes seemed mildly irritating when 20 trucks ran, but were the fans running? Dunno. Move in and out of the track area and it's ok.

Yeah... its not too bad. Very nice setup going on. And Welcome back... check out the winter bash thread if you are looking to kick up some snow...

I guess ventillation and sound absorption would have taken a lot more money and time. I wonder what they have in the way of 1/18th racing, my wife and I got Mini-LST's for xmas.

Ventilation is either there or planned, for certain. It might not be 100% done yet...
18th track isn't built yet, but you can run anything on electric days on the big indoor track. How fast is the miniLST?

All we've done so far is run it in the living room, I put a little jump up and we were soaring into the couch (and actually almost cleared it which would have been disastrous seeing the living room window is behind it) so I guess the speed is decent. So far they seem to be pretty tough except that the steering turnbuckles pop off way too easy. I'd like be able to replace it with a screw somehow.

One guy I talked to put a BL system in one but it completely tore up the drivetrain.

Sound aborbtion is in, and ventilationis up and running. BUt when you have 20-30 buggies/trucks running at once its going to be smokey and noisey, except on electric days. The new place is 1000 x's better in sound absorbtion and ventilation.

The thing to remember here is you guys went on the busiest day of the year. Its kinda like going to the mall the day after Thanksgiving. Did you think you where going to have the stores to yourself. Alot of people where off because of the holiday and it is newly opened. Once it opened for a while things will settle down and return to normal.

Great analogy! People need to remember, there won't always be 100 people there on a practice day. Many people were off work for the holidays + it's a new track.

Total agreement, and without limits on number allowed on track at once, anything goes, and did! It was great to be a spectator!

Yup. How many people judge their shopping experience based on black friday (the day after thanksgiving)? People shouldn't judge the track based on the busiest practice day either. Smile
