Right, so I'm in the final semester of my senior year at college, and my Dell laptop was the world to me. Then the other day it suffered what I can only determine to be catastrophic hardware failure. When it tries to boot the screen shows a bunch of jibbberish, when turns completley white, then goes black and becomes completely unresponsive. I don't have to tell anyone who's been down the college route how much crap I had saved on my hard drive. A new laptop is on the way as I can't afford to mess with Dell's customer service (most of whom are based in India) right now. All I can say is AAARRRRGH. Sorry, I just wanted to vent. Later - Dave B:mad:

To anyone who uses a computer and the data is vital, two words... Back up!
A second hard drive that mirrors the first at least once a week. It is a given. Every drive dies sooner or later.

I know how you feel.. My ancient PII toshiba died a month ago and I was lost without it! It was horrible! I had no idea how attached I was to my Laptop until It stoped working on me.
If you have to replace it seriously don't get a Dell. Both my mom and sister have Dell laptops and they have constantly had problems. In fact my mom Likes my New IBM Thinkpad Z60t soo much she canceled her Dell Laptop Business Lease and ordered an IBM Thinkpad Tablet PC. It may be more money but I'll take the qualiy and reliability over cheap price any day when it comes to something that I rely on soo much.

I have had a compaq presario2100 for like 4 or 5 years and everything is still working great, the only thing is, the dog got his foot wrapped around the power cord and ripped it so do the cord has to be rubber-banned to one side so it makes a connection, for the new one we are looking at Gateway or HP

you may still be able to pull the data off of the hard drive. i've had a number of hard drives crash over the years, and have saved most of the data.

yes... sometimes something else fails and you just need to throw the drive in another puter...

Thanks guys, I'm back up and running. Bigjs nailed it, as soon as my new laptop arrived I swapped hard drives and sure enough, my ulcer went away. BTW bigjs, thanks for your info on the Lancer Evo. - Later DaveB
