how many people didn't break in there first nitro properly?

okay last year I got into Nitro. I started with a Nitro MT, and when Jack came over to play with the new toy, neither of us were willing to wait for the break in. The motor lasted like three tanks.

so my question, how many people did this to there first nitro motor.

When breaking in an engine you really have to follow the manufacture recommended break-in or the engine will not last you very long as you found out the hard way.

<flaming is not allowed> The point of this thread wasn't to ask how to properly break in a motor, I know how to do that. The point of the thread was more, to talk about the FIRST nitro vehicle that everybody bought, and because they were unwilling to follow the proper break in procedure they ended up wearing out the motor much faster then they expected. I did it to my first motor, because of my anxiety to play with my new car. I was impatient and not willing to wait as a result I blew up the motor.

A little touchy.... We all try to help each other out on these boards, just because someone posts a reply a little off topic, is no reason to attack them. Hopefully when you need a little advice on something, he won't remember being called a stroke for giving "stupid" advice. In my opinion, when I spend $400+ on something, I'm going to take the time to read the proper break-in procedures, and follow them. 30-60 minutes of proper break-in is a lot better than watching an engine go up in smoke, and having to wait till you can afford another $200 for a new engine.

Before I get accused of not answering the question at hand, I took the time to break my engine in properly, because I valued my investment.

For my first nitro I Broke the 2.5 in on my maxx following the instructions step by step. It lasted about 2 gallons because I never touched the needles once and it was running lean most of the time. My next 2.5 didn't even get through break in as it came from Traxxas screwed up. My 3rd 2.5 lasted 5 strong gallons and that is the motor I learned to tune with.

I had a friend who bought a nitro rustler 5 years ago. We (we, because I helped with everything) didn't read not one sentence from the directions. We finally got it started after about an hour of trying. The truck wouldn't move , even at full throttle. after about 2 tanks of trying to get it to move at full throttle it started moving. Then it proceeded to get faster and faster with ever minute going by. That motor still works fine (pro.15).

So I've done it both ways and had decent success both ways

Did you buy first Nitro yourself, or your parents bought it? Cause if your parents bought it, no wonder you didn't follow directions...

Clearwaterms, why did you not break the engine in correctly? You should of broken it in the correct way. I guess thats why it broke because of not following the manual, yep......should of followed directions and it might of lasted alittle longer.

Ok folks, let's not resort to name calling/flaming. Were all friends here.

I spoke with clearwaterms over the phone (we've been friends a long time) to find out why he typed what he typed. That post was not like him (IMO). He understands the reasoning behind breaking in a motor properly (he learned the hard way). It's very easy to skip steps when you're excited about a new toy or whatever you purchase. I'm sure we're all guilty of that in someway, shape, or form. I sure know I am. He was asking a simple question to see what others had done with their very first nitro engine.

I guess this has happened enough (from other boards) that he felt he needed to say something. This is the third time he's blown up at someone over that type of post. Apparently he feels that too many people nowadays don't read the post and respond accordingly. They simply reiterate already known facts and throw them back at the orginal poster.

I hope I haven't offended anyone. Just trying to offer a neutral opinion. I, personally, do not agree with his response. I am with everyone else that it was way too harsh and could have been easily worded different to get the point accross. I do not approve of flaming on these boards and the post has been edited accordingly.

clearwaterms, let's try and behave shall we? Everyone on this board is a nice person and very helpfull on and off the boards. Be smarter with your responses.

This thread shall stay open for discussion. Even if it begins to stray off topic, hearing more opinions (on the name calling posts) would be helpfull for everyone I think. If stuff like this happens again, threads will get locked down in a hurry.

r0nd3L, that comment was even more uncalled for, but I am going to restrain from telling you how I feel about it, but to answer the question, no my parents didn't pay for it... It was payed for with disposable income, and at the time wasn't considered a huge fiscal commitment (man was I nieve)

To answer the original question:
I can't say that I followed the break-in procedures completely
on my first nitro but I did take it easy with it for a few tanks.
I guess I was lucky. I was a little more carefull with my Revo
and Titan Twin, though.

well on my maxx i really diddant have to break it in since i got it from my bro...but when i bought the 4-tec with the 2.5 i new what would happen if i diddant break it in right. so for about the first 3-4 tanks after proper break in i still took it ez as if i was still breaking it in...that could also be tha reason that i have never had any major problems with it....and i Love my little 2.5

My first break-in, I destroyed the P/S in about 5 tanks. Way to lean and didnt follow the insructions at all.
Since then, I try my hardest to resist the temptation of opening it up WOT during the break-in steps.
I guess I don't have the patience to break a motor in gently. i want the power right away.

If all engines had such an easy break-in as the Savage, this would not be a problem. Only 3 tanks to break in, the first of which, you just raise the truck, and let it idle. A perfect time to have a cigarette, or a beer. The next 2 tanks, you just drive. The directions say to stay below half throttle for the second tank, but it is SO rich from the factory, that WOT runs won't do anything. The 3rd tank, you can take it up to WOT, for short bursts, but as I just mentioned, WOT shows no increase in speed over half throttle. Then comes the long awaited (45 min) 4th tank, time to tune, and see some speed....

Clearwater, I'm sure that everyone is now over the "incident". I for one, wasn't upset about your reply, just a little shocked. Most forums are nationwide, or even worldwide, so some tension can be expected. This board is all locals, and we all try to help each other, (with the occasional "ball busting" for fun). Hopefully you can make it out to the Pizza Bash on the 6th, and we can all have a blast, and share R/C stories....

Clearwaters I except your apologies and in response to your original post: I have to say no I have not hurried break-in so that I can start playing, but the though was there… My first RC truck was an RC10 GT RTR and the motor is this running with 4 gallons through it…

I have the same temptation as yourself CW, but since my P3 was so easy to break in by just driving it around for 20mins it didn't kill me too bad to follow it. I did recently just break in a megatech q1.6 after I lost the BI instructions and noticed that it ran like doo doo until I started to follow the traxxas BI way. Not sure how long those motors last anyway but I'm sure the longivity of the motor after breakin has a lot to do with which manuf. it is and how it was designed. Some are just more tempermental than others.

The direction for breaking in my Sirio.18 said this "take it easy for 5 tanks" that's it! I took it easy (under half throttle) for 5 tanks running it pretty rich and it lasted a long time.

I consider myself lucky. I got my first nitro car used, so the fun began immediately..FULL THROTTLE! My second car. just 3 months later, was brand new. Fortunately I had heard from helpful folks, such as those on this board, and through reading good magazines on the hobby, that break-in is a MUST. So as boring as it was I watched 6 tanks of fuel turn into a puddle of oil on the garage floor. But that motor runs fine, and I have been keeping it a little rich just to make sure. I will lean it out (a little) this season.

I feel bad for anyone who has something brand new break so soon. But as they say, the best learned lessons are those learned the hard way...sorry about your motor, really, I am.
