If you are talking about the stock maxx tread bars tires It used to be a practice in the early days of the Maxx (when the original maxx first came out) to cut tread bars off in different patterns to effectivly create new tread designs. It also cuts weight and makes the tire more plyable and able to conform to surfaces a lot easier.

here are a couple examples of what I did to mine years ago on my old SM chassis maxx.

Holy Crap john!!!! Thats must of taken you forever!!! Not to mention the huge amounts of black dust you had to have everywhere!!!! Impressive work though!!!

Ive seen guys just round out the edge of the tread bar... They would take the edge off and round the tread bar into the carcass/sidewall.. It seemed to work well Dirtdawg3 and gsmaxx both had tires like that for racing

its dremmel time baby! Ive used a sanding drum or a high speed carbide cutter with positive results. Imo pull the tire off the rim get a good grip and go slow till you get the hang of it. you my want to pinch the tire the elevate the section you are cutting. for most surfaces Id imagine the front tires on johns truck would be the better choice for a cut pattern. get creative tho, lets see what you can think up!

When I had mine, I just cut a 1/4 inch slot in the middle of each bar to make the tire more flexible.

I took some side cutters and cut off a good portion of the tread bars that I was going to shave down. then I went at it with a dremel I think using a coarse sanding drum if I remember. Also it helps to take a black marker to mark the ones you are going to cut just to be sure you don't screw up and cut off the worng one. Also you don't have to dremel them down until they are smooth. you and also just dremel them a little and have a shallower tread bar then a full bar or half bars... ect.

Also if you cut off every other bar the tires make a lot mroe noise on the pavement. Like a cool rumbling howling sound!

Definitely mark the ones to be cut and double check before cutting, I made that mistake.

I ended up cutting every other tread off and didn't personally like it to much, pretty unstable setup. What I did next is cut every tread off on all tires for a "slick" effect and was much more pleased (although those sucked also to be honest, the compound just isn't right on stock maxx tires)

I used lexan scissors to cut off the treads, works pretty good.

If you want a more racey wheel/tire setup I have a set of bowties/velocities that you would be much happier with. The tires are decently worn but still hook well at Leisure and general offroad. The foams are in great shape also, just replaced those a gallon ago.
