Troubleshooted the engine problems on the savage yesterday.
#1
With the weather so nice yesterday, I couldn't resist getting outside and putting some runtime on the savage. Some of you may know, I had major engine issues last time I raced. I was on a mission to find the source of the problem.

Problem 1: Had a hell of a time starting the truck at the track and to keep a long story short, it ended up being the high speed needle tube thing that had come loose on me. Pretty funny to see when I'm trying to start it and the whole thing comes off and shoots fuel at me. No problem. Tighten that thing down, re-tuned the truck runs ok.

Problem 2: The following week, it was running good during practice. The time trials are coming up, and for some reason my truck was flooded pretty bad and I don't know why. I ended up screwing up the pullstarter on the truck. I had to run with the damn cord wrapped around the body posts, because I got lucky enough to get the truck start on the pull that broke the pullstarter. Fixed that and when the mains started, my truck was running slower than dirt. What the hell!

Fast forward to yesterday.

I took the truck out, fired up easy, ran ok, and 2 minutes later, slower than hell again  . I'm getting furious at this point. I take a quick look over the truck and notice that the high speed needle looked a little too far out. Tightened it down all the way...it was 5 turns out!. Set it at 2 to start and the truck was flying. 2 minutes later, same thing. The damn set screw backed it's way out again. Tighten it down one more time, put the truck on blocks and mashed it while looking at the needle. Everytime I hit the gas, the screw would back out AT LEAST 1/2 turn!!. Pulled the needle all the way out and noticed the o-ring on it kinda looked at little flat. After some trial and error, I discovered that a stock hpi shock shaft o-ring, fits pretty damn good. Screwed it in and immediately noticed that there was much more resistance when turning the screw. Set it back at 2 turns out and crossed my fingers.

That truck was flat out plying for the next 20 minutes with no movement on the HSN!!!!

I finally fixed that mofo!! Big Grin

My advice? Learn from my mistakes!! Check those o-rings and make sure everything is tight!!

Sweet... Glad you got it running right.... Did you get in touch with Six about the backplate???

How's it running now that you have Full Throttle????

You going to the track Saturday?

It sounds like you have an air leak somewhere. Check tank, carb and backplate. I had the same problem with the original tank, I replaced it with the OFNA tank which I think every Savage owner should do because it is a much better tank and the trunk runns awsome with it.

This is what I have: http://www.neweramodels.com/cgi-bin/item...rt_id=1704

He said it was a bad o-ring on the carb HSN, and that the problem is fixed....

I'm picking up the backplate from six this weekend. I will be racing this saturday for sure. Truck runs great too. It was wheeling all of the place at first, but when the truck warmed up nicely, it went away. The rear would just squat like crazy and the truck would take off like a raped aped.

I'm looking forward to saturday. Hopefully I won't broke for the first time in a long time Smile.

I have the roto-start on my Savage and I have a hell of a time getting it to start. I usually have to pull the air filter off and flood the carb to get it to fire. But thats usually only on the first start, once its running, if I kill it or it dies on a rollover it will start right back up.
