me and my buddies were messing around a baseball field doing some jumps and stuff when i noticed my savage 25 like reving up and loosing speed. thought that my wheels were just slipping thru the grass so i just continued running. then after a while it just stopped.:confused: went over it to check what was happening. the engine was running but no movement at all. thought it was the spur gear but it was all intact and just spinning and spinning. could it be that i have chewed out my transmission or is it just the clutch sliding? i have reverse though. i haven't pulled the tranny out coz i wanted some advice first. any help would be deeply appreciated.

Check your hexes. You might have stripped one or more.
Check your slipper nut for tightness.
Check your diffs, you might have blown 1 or both.
Check your tranny.

thanks for the advice. diff are newly converted to 4 bevel but the other stuff i guess i would have to check. appreciate your info alute:

if you have reverse, then I would think its your tranny.
check your tranny

I would check the wheel hexes first

This has happend to me.
If the spur is spinning and not moving the tranny, you have likely melted out the center of the spur. It will spin all day and not move the truck. My guess is that you will need a new spur gear, slipper pad, center bushing and spring. Before you install the new one, you will need to deglaze the slipper disk with sandpaper, and clean it up really well so that it functions properly, then crank it down good and snug.
If thats not it, then any of the 3000 grub screws in the drive train could have come loose and caused it to stop.
Usually, if the tranny fails on a Savage, you know it.

thanks for all your advice guys. checked my wheel hexes, a ok, then pulled out the tranny and replaced slipper clutch and tighen it as instructed. went thru thw whole tranny as well and everything checked out nice. no broken gears or worn out parts checked my clutch shoes but really do not know to check if the are worn out so just sanded them a bit along with the cb. then tried to run it. moved a bit but something still keeps on slipping just really not sure where its coming from. where do i go from here?

Did you try tightening your clutch nut? It's the black nut on the outside of the flywheel but inside of the CB (you have to take off the CB and shoes to get to it.)

i just changed my clutch shoes into mugens figuring that it might be the clutch slipping but to no avail but i will gladly oblige your recommendation. thanks again

Do does the truck move at all under its own power? Do the drive shafts to the tires spin??

just took off the shoes and the clutch nut is tight as can be. could not even turn it. i'm going back to the tranny just in case i missed som:confused: ething.

yes it does spin but when you give it more power, thats when the slipping occurs and it wont go nowhere

Could your slipper pads be broken?
And I think what Rocco was trying to ask is, are the axels spinning and the wheels aren't or are they not spinning.

well it the drive shafts to the diffs and to the wheels move then its not the tranny! Save yourself the time of pulling it... Look to the spipper clutch... if its a savage x i has two slipper pads and they may be shot .... check there

just replaced the slipper clutch last night and it was pretty bad. that is why i thought that my troubles were over but i was wrong. to recap everything that has been done, replaced the slipper clutch and it's only a single since my savage is a 25. and replaced my clutch shoes with aluminum from the stock teflon. should i turn my attention back to the slipper clutch? pls advice

go thru the drivetrain (all the drive cups and stuff) and look to make sure that all of the setscrews are there.

It still sounds like the slipper clutch to me. I had the same problem and only after I sanded the chit outa the slipper disk did it go. The disk was completely glazed and would slip no matter what.

went thru my mt last night and rechecked the slipper clutch, sanded the slipper disk abit just to roughen it slightly even went thru all the trouble of placing my spare tranny, well just in case you know, also did check my set screws to the cups and diff. everything was there and secure.but still to no avail. so you were right of not even having to bother with the tranny. what i could not understand is why would it run abit and then slide if i give more power. whent i lifted the truck and pull on the throtle, all the wheels would spin. a friend told me to check my reverse module link if it was fully being pulled or pushed by the servo coz he had the same problem before. gonna try that one out and replace the slipper disk as well. wish me luck guys coz i am just about pissed by now. thanks again for all the follow up that you've been giving me.

I did not think of the reverse module. Thats a possibility. My problem with the slipper occured because it loosened, then melted the center of the spur. This caused the spring to push the bushing into the soft plastic and then the slipper could not tighten it enough because the bushing was in too deep. I pulled my hair out trying to figure it out. Thats why I had to replace the spur gear, spring, and rough up the slipper disk. I had no problems since.
but the reverse module is a new one to me. The linkage is a bit tricky to get just right, but then it was not prone to problems.
