Savage Questions
#1
I am in the market to get a savage but have a few questions.

What is the difference between a Savage 25 and Savage X? Also, is the Savage SS available in RTR or only a kit?

Thanks

They changed lots of stuff from 25 to the x. Don't waste your money on the 25. It's has been obsoleted by the x.

SS is just the kit version of the savage. No RTR.

Definately go with the Savage X, if you are buying new. The SS and the Savage 25 are the older versions. The newer Savage X comes with some needed upgrades already done, such as the 4 spider diff mod and the Cam style steering. Also, there were some new modifications made, to make it a little easier to work on. The oldr savages were a P.I.T.A. to work on the diffs, the Savage X has made this a LOT easier.

I bought a savage 25 and I love it!! not a single problem yet and the cam type servo comes with the newer 25, atleast mine did. And the only update they did to the diffs was easy removal without removing the control arm assembly which is held on with 6 screws. I've have my savage in pieces already installed a 3speed trans, dual disc brakes, metal spur, properly shimmed out the rtr clutch bell, some metal upgrades, bumpers, chassis support, body posts. Install higher torque servos, fuel filter. I love this truck! Not saying the x is bad but the 21, 25, have alot of available parts in your LHS. Pick on what you like, both are GREAT trucks, and I'm sure you'll be pleased either way!

I'm with Whitey04.
The only signifigant upgrades to the X version is lower center of gravity TVPs and easy access diffs and tranny.
BUT, the easy access comes with the price of structural weakness. The X tranny case cannot handle a more powerful motor than stock. HPI recommends that you install the old style tranny case if you want to use the K4.6 or other bigger motors. The ease of access became a non-issue with my old Savage. After I had wrenched on it a couple times I learned to dismantle and reassemble it easily. After I did the diff mod, I only had to service the diffs again once in three years.
You can also get a great deal on the older Savages used.

if you go hit HPI's website there are illustrations..

I'm not sure of all the ins and outs, but the X allows things to be rebuilt and come apart a lot easier, I guess on the previous ones a lot of stuff had to come off to get to a diff or whatever, now it's like 6-8 screws and the thing is in your hand ready to rebuild.. total dissassembly the other night took all of 15 minutes or so and I had all the components sitting out (diffs, tranny, engine, etc)
