"GM’s two-mode hybrid system is now available in the Escalade Hybrid, giving it a 50% overall increase in city fuel economy."
So it gets what? 18 city, 28 highway? Still not real fuel effiecent. I guess it's relative.

Big improvement will be at schools, drive throughs, traffic lights, rail road crossing, and other places where you have to sit and wait with the engine running. The computer can shut the engine off and run the first 30 mph on all electric motor and battery before it has to restart the engine if the battery has a good charge on it. They're also going to use the Cylinder De-activation on it with the larger V-8 and program things to work together so that if there may be a need for a bit more power the motors will back up the engine while it's cruising the highway in it's 4 cylinder mode! Chrysler is going to be using this on the Hybrid version of the Durango and Aspen with the MDS equipped Hemi motor as well.

Our friend has a hybrid and its the same way, when hes like in the city and is under 30 mph its electric. I think its a pretty cool idea.

Yup, and if you combine that with a larger battery that you can plug in with limited range (again like the Chevy Volt Concept Car btw) on battry alone, you can go for a good distance on battery alone! IIRC the Volt is supposed to run about 30 miles on just battery before needing the engine to fire and generate more electricity to charge the battery

FYI, the Prius is so popular in chicago that the dealers get a premium for them. On the east coast they discount them $3000 to get rid of them. A coworker got his in Delaware, drove it home, and still saved $2400 after gas and a plane ticket. He knocks down 40mpg commuting from Wicker Park to Downers Grove daily. Not bad. But he does have to drive a Prius to get that....sad.
Refer to the Jeff Dunham routine.....he makea fun ofa car...ah car not gay, he gay.

I didn't think that was so bad myself, that's actually better than my Jeep is getting. That's only running around 14-16 mpg

Rocco,
The Hybrid system may boost the overall vehicle MPG, but only if people drive them efficiently.
I guess I appreciate the engineering effort to produce a truck that is big and can get mileage comparable to a sedan that doesn't have a Hybrid system. That's a plus. The cost of that vehicle will be a premium, as are all hydrids.
I haven't seen any facts about the Cadillac hybrid proposed for the Escalade, but USUALLY the system uses a smaller gas engine, coupled with the electric drive, so HP will probably not be Northstar V8 levels.
In the end, the owners have to weigh if the cost of owning the hybrid vehicle is offset by less fuel costs. The lower emissions part is nice too.
I like the approach GM and Dodge are using to shut down 1/2 of the V8's they put in the Impala SS and the Charger Hemi (both around 320hp). Still gives mid 20's on the highway, with out needing the hybrid system.
and, there cannot be a thread-jacking, because this is off-topic, so, wail away mash::joy:

Yeah, the more I read about it....it should be a marvel of modern engineering, but for $75k, it should be, right?!

My pet peeve is at any parking lot when people go through the rows the wrong way. Expecially when they have the cars parked on the angle so you can only park from one way. 99% of the time if I can I go down the row to block em off and make em back up.
