Thats awsome that there easy to work on..... It should make it easy to work on since youll be fixing it more than driving...huh sounds like r/c ....LOL
If at first you dont succeed, suck another seed!
unless someone's got an offer of a different vehicle that is under what i'm looking for (specifically meeting my parents requests) then i'm more or less out of ideas.

Jammin' CRT, BCE j2pro, Nova p5x, Fioroni pipe I was born under the hood of a 68 FastBack, Synthetic 10w-30 in my veins, 120 octane in my bottle, Nitrous Oxide for adrenalin and a Blower for a soother
Mid 90's civic that was well maintained yet possibly high mileage is what I'd shoot for if I was you.
My next car will be a Civic and will be left stock, they are just to easy to maintain, cheap, and reliable. It's a no brainer.
I have a 2000 Jetta with 145,000 miles, well maintained and is a total POS, breaks down all the time.
My wife has a 2000 civic, we never maintained it cept changing the oil, it has 130,000 miles and totally rocks! never had one problem, EVER. Great gas mileage as well.
yeah, and based on what i just called the insurance company if i'm insured on any vehicle in the 1990's our premium will go down, which is always good to hear. so as long as its a little older of a car my parents are saving money.

Convince them to let you buy a thirdgen F-body (82-92 Camaro/Firebird). You can get them with a V6 so your parents and the insurance company will be happy. Then once you gain your parents trust, drop a 305/350 TPI motor into it. Very fun, cheap cars, and great to learn on.
A 4-cylinder fox-body mustang is also an option, but they were ungodly slow. At least if you get a 2.8/3.1 third gen, they aren't too terrible. Oh, and I have a 3.4 laying around you could drop right in in place of the 2.8/3.1
TRX E-Maxx - spooled rear
HPI N-RS4 - OS .18CV-RX, Full CF/Aluminum
TRX 4-Tec - Mamba 5700, slicks
TRX Stampede - Orbital 10T, Intellispeed ESC, FLM stuff, Swami wheelie bar, aluminum shocks
they said no to all camaros/firebirds/mustangs and the sort. even to a V6 model. so i'm still on the lookout for something good.
the part thats holding me back from getting alot of different cars is that they have to have dual airbags, so even if i was able to convince them to let me get a camaro i beleive it was 92 that they first had dual airbags. so it would have to be at least a 92.

Yeah I know you said that already. My mom didn't like the idea at first either. Had to convince her that the 305 cars were slow Oh, and 92's didn't get dual airbags either, oops. Actually the only third gens that got even one airbag were either 90-92 or 91-92, I don't remember exactly. Guess I forgot about that requirement when I suggested them.
Its going to be hard to get a decent car under $2k with two air bags that's decent to look at and moddable Most cars didn't have dual air bags til '95 or so.

price is flexible, i just have about 2g to work with right now so it would take more time to get up 3g. or some fast talking.
