So Vista sucks. Has since its release date, which is why Microsoft is planning on Windows 7.0 in 2010. Vista is rapidly becoming another Microsoft Windows ME.
So what choices do you have? Try Linux, for the past 3 years its been far ahead of Windows and Mac OS X in terms of graphical eye candy, and its customizable to the extreme.
Its worth a try, download a live cd and simply boot off it like you would a system restore disc. It'll let you try it without harming any files on your computer.
What does it look like? Pretty much like anything. It can look like Vista, XP, Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, and even stuff you wouldn't have guessed yet.
Here is a screenshot of my desktop, its an old Powermac, I put this all together as an experiment. Click the pic for the full size uncompressed verison 1680x1050.
And a video of the OS in action from youtube, its not my machine in that video but my machine does all of the same stuff.

I was trying to setup an Ubuntu server, but I couldn't get the hang of running all the programs in code since that's the only way to have a true server. Standard Ubuntu is pretty nice though. Not enough compatibility for me though. I tried Vista, and that was terrible, so now I run winxp pro which works just fine.
PS- Ubuntu ran super fast on my old computer, which leads me to believe it would be scorching fast on my current computer, proving M$ sucks at optimizing things.
And I know that guy is just trying to show off the capabilities, but does he really have to be so obnoxious with it? Spinning 4 desktops at 50mph doesn't impress me haha. I may try the live cd again, but on this comp.

I agree, most of what he did was to get peoples attention, if you are truly USING the os you won't be doing that.
However, the wobbly windows are pure eye candy, but eye candy I welcome them

If you want the best of both operating system, install xp pro and then download and install the vista theme. Then you get the looks and performance.

Yeah, but you don't get the cool effects. I have XP pro and this dual booted.

I agree, vista is garbage!! I switched to a mac because of it. OS X is by far and away better than vista. I have a desktop pc with vista at home and it's only use is for converting videos and a file/print server for the home network. Everything else is done on my mac laptop.
I've been tempted to wipe vista altogether and trying out ubunto, but have been unable to source out software for ripping my dvd collection and converting it into itunes ready videos.

I've used the various themes and plugins to add cool effects to windows and such. Its not really worth it, the performance hit and resource requirements go through the roof.
Vista, OS X and Compiz do it all on the video card, resource use for OS X and Compiz is generally under 300mb total. Vista's cache scheme makes it take up every bit of memory it can find, it only releases it when another app asks for the memory.
