careers? Looking for some input
#1
Yeah I know this thread probably sounds very dumb and what not, but I am currently a high school senior. I am going to University of Colorado at Boulder next year.
I've always wanted to live a extravagant lifestyle, like my father. My father owns a medium sized recycling business that has allowed him to live a very solid lifestyle with new cars, large houses, and buying us, his children, pretty much what we want. I guess he is living the stereotypical "american dream".
Anyways, Now that I am starting to grow up, I am realizing the world is not set up for someone to just go out and be a "baller". I will need to work at it. I feel I am a smart kid with a great sense of business(owned a ebay business since age 13), and am looking at various ideas to major in and subsequently do for the rest of my life.

I chose the following 3 careers for various reasons:
Dentistry: I was born missing 16 of my adult teeth, and my dentist has done a great job of making my mouth look "normal", and I will be getting implants in the next few years. My dentist has completely changed my life allowing me to live a normal life without fear of ridicule from my peers and what not, I envy my dentist, he does what he loves and has tons of money doing it(has a large house, a carerra gt, vacations when he wants). Also, being a dentist you can work the hours you want and not worry about working for "the man".

Psychiatrist: I also have ADHD. When I was younger, I went to a psychiatrist and was given various medications, until we found what worked, adderal. The Psychiatrist has also changed my life for the better. I would love to be that guy, the one who has the power to allow children and teens to live a better, more socially accepted life style.

And finally, Business owner: My dad owns his recycling business like I said earlier. He can work whenever he wants, and is able to come in late and leave early at his will. The only problem is the fact that his business(aluminum recycling) is completely dependent on the economy and fluctuates, never allowing him to know exactly how much money he will be able to take home, making him worry about money all too often.

What I am looking for, is input on what career of these three you would choose, and why? I have my whole life ahead of me and would like to take advantage of it. I don't want to live paycheck to paycheck. I love money, and NEED to have alot of it, I know the saying money isn't everything, but I am a bit of a technology freak who likes to have everything and get it ASAP.
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advanced for any input you guys may have.

Not going to happen. My dad has told me many times that he is willing to help me get on my feet, but won't hand everything down to me. Plus, the building he owns for his business is his retirement. Also, as I posted earlier, his business can be very rocky at times and he doesn't want me to go into his business as it can change at any given second.

On another note, his dad, my grandpa, gave him a $600.00 loan to start his business 30 years ago. Thats all my dad got from his parents, who where also wealthy and sucessful lawyers. My dad used that 600.00 to buy a truck, and paid my grandparents back 1 week later with interest. From that point, as the saying goes, the rest was history.

I think aluminium is always going to be a commodity. Many Many things are made of it, and one of the best ways to get it back, is through recycling. I like the dentist story. It makes sense to want to do good, because someone helped you out.

I have always wanted to own my own business what ever it may be. One day (within the next 5 years hopefully) I will. Not certain on what it will be but certain I will prevail lol. You seem to come from a business background so even if it's not recycling you're family would be able to help in the business aspect and knowledge of your adventure a lot. Thats just my .02

I would say buisness or dentistry. But I do not know much about you personally, so good luck with what ever you choose.

Same here. I am a senior and have no clue what I want to do with my life, but I would like to own my own business of some sort.

If you are a technology freak I would say none of the three is right. You should think about something that is going to make you happy not something that someone else has done for you. Yeah I know those people changed your life but you have to do something that you like and enjoy doing. How do you know that you are going to enjoy smelling funky beathe or get tired of listening to other peoples problem and how do you know in a couple of years that colleting scrap is going to be a booming business. I Think that you should do what feels right to you and not what you think will pay you a lot of money and make you happy. But if you think these things will make you happy you take your pick.

Well I would say make a career choice based on something that you like doing, as if you don't enjoy the work you are doing then you are in the wrong job. Also don't base you choice on what someone else did for you, as you might not really like doing that type of work, although you might like it there is always the chance that isn't the career for you. I would do as Mike said to become a business major or at lease minor as it will look good when you apply for a job, but try to take a coruse to major in that you will enjoy doing (also go to every class, and don't fall behind as you fail).

You know when I was back in High School, I went to one of them find yourself centers to well find what I was qualified to do. I never was good at math, I was forced to do shakespear so I could pass english, and I was told once I had ADD. I found out these folowing things.
1. I never had ADD, I just dint want to study, I wanted to party and get high! It is called being a youth.
2. I was taught to never backtalk to an adult. My dad whipped my rear a few times and I turned out pretty level minded.
3. I sucked at math and now I am on the way to being a registered Land Surveyor.
4. Never pay someone to do your College assignment's for you, you'll only need to do the classes again. Hence why I am back in school at age 39.
5. I went to S.I.U. for Business because I was told it was a growing field, when I graduated it wasnt growing anymore. I had (5) top paying jobs with retail and most of them never let me go past a certain level because of this reason. "You are over qualified!" definition: The guy who is just above you is affraid to loose his job that he has worked all his life to be in. To a guy who just graduated from Business school and has forgotten more about business then you have ever thought about.
6. No one can ever tell you what to do! Timmy, Write this down! "dont take life too seriously, you'll never get out alive."
basically, you'll find your oppertunity when it comes. It cant be handed to you, purchased for you, or thought up for you. You have to find it for you.

6 years in Land Surveying and I never thought I would do this as a career. I make excellent money and I actually enjoy it. I dont have a job, I have a trade! And my job is concidered among everyone involved in building or planning as a nessesary evil. Which means nothing goes in or on the ground unless I say so.
