I heard this is caused by high exhaust temps causing soot in the particulate filter to catch on fire. I guess this happens if your engine is over fueling or are consuming oil. The fuel or oil gets caught in the particulate filter and when the temps get high the fuel or oil ignite and you get a nice flame.
