I dunno...the GT would not be much different besides cost and working on it.
Besides working on them is half the fun.
He wanted a MT...I too would lean towards a Savage.
Especially being a newbie and learning to drive---this is where the durability will pay for itself.
I had my Neighbor get one and he is really happy with it and amazed at the beating he gave it so far.
