Computer Hardware help needed
#1
Ok some people have already helped, but I am clueless when it comes to whats good and needed.

This is my scenario, I want to transfer HI8 camcorder movies form my sony camcorder to DVD. I do not have a DVD burner in my computer, so I will need an external one,

My PC is an HPa330n.

I was told I need a burner and a firewire, my computer does not have this, and some type of software. I am not looking to do any crazy editing or anything.

The help I need is specifics, I need people to tell me to go by this model etc. So if any of you have any of this or have experience please direct me.

Thanks in advance

Yes it came with a USB cable. So you need a firewire camcorder. I thought the firewire part was fo rthe computer.. See I know nothing about this crap

Cool thanks, they might be different. I have no idea, I thought ProPC told me to get fire wire. I understood it to be just a different type of connection into the computer, that I had to install a new board/panel into one of the slots in the rear of the PC. I never thought the camera made a difference.

But your help is appreciated and anyone elses in welcome also

well i dont see any reason why you cant just put an internal dvd burner in your computer. You can pick one of those up for like 45 bucks, you can get a firewire card for around 30 bucks. That just leaves you with buying a cable and some dvd-r's. They are 2 different ports but you can choose to use either one.

Firewire card
external dvd drive

You need to go to best buy yourself and get a firewire cable that will plug into your camera. Bring your usb cable with and match the end from that cable that goes into the camera with the firewire cable and make sure there identical.

also read the system requirements for that dvd burner and make sure they match up with your computer. I have no idea what is inside your computer or what kind of hard drive space you got so it will probly be easier for you to find out that info instead of me spending hours looking up your system.

USB and Firewire are too diffrent ways of transfuring data from an external sorce. If your camera came with a USB cord use that unless you camera has both a USB AND Firewire port on it, if so spend the few bucks and get a firewire card for your comp (to my knolage firewire is a hare faster then USB). and for a external hard drive check out http://www.newegg.com i swear by this webcite for computer stuff!

cemeb4dk, what model do you have?

Mich is right on with the hardware, thats generally what your looking for but don't buy a Firewire cable that looks exactly like a USB cable they are not going to look the same. Usb and firewire have totally different plugs( A-A, A-b, 4 Pin to 6 Pin to Ilink to 1394)and ports.

Once we get model # and we should be able to steer you in the right direction Smile

Ok, I did a search at HPs website for your computer model. On the spec sheet it states that you have two firewire ports built-in to that system, one in the back and one in the front (PCs will label firewire ports as IEEE 1394, not firewire). I was able to find a photo of the back of your computer where all of your devices plug in(mouse, keyboard etc.) Look at the photo then look at the back of your computer. The firewire port is the top most port listed under the red number 3 with the red arrow pointing to it. I still need to know the exact model camera you have. Also on the spec sheet for your HP it states that that system does come with a built in DVD burner, now maybe it was an option that you could get and you didnt get it.

Thanks Pro, I will confirm when I get home.

So if this is correct all I need is a firewire cable that will connect into my camcorder and an external burner.

you might also want to check how much hd space you have, video can take up a lot of space.

I checked your model (Hp 330n) a couple days ago and it wasn't included, but if it is...lucky you & more money towards your external dvd.

Here are the specs for the model# 330n

Ever consider swapping you internal cd-rom for a internal dvd burner? That will save you some money and some space, and its easy to do.Wink
