general revo discussion

I use the smaller maxx size rims/tires because you have way more options. Plus I wanted the Crimes and I didn't want to have to modify them to fit revo rims

You guys see Imex came out with some tires for the Revo style rim? Saw it in the new issue of XRC cars.

Busy weekend wrenching on the Weevo. We built a ramp (see Gallery) and promptly snapped off a shock, which must have been defective, because we all know Revo's don't break. Well, I've had a Hobbytown gift card burning a hole in my pocket since Fathers Day so off we go for parts. I had already built the Crimefighters on Velocitys and was waiting to run them to see if they made a difference. In stock form they just felt a little grippier, and turned in a little better (this is on grass, mind you). So I wanted to see what Steve Slayden's setup feels like, so we bought and installed:

Shock rebuild for the broken one and the other front shock; drain and refill rear shocks (does Traxxas always fill the new shocks with black oil?)
P2 rockers
Red push rods
Tan springs rear, green springs front
50wt oil in all four shocks

Now this thing really bites into the corners, drives flat, brakes without front end dive, and really hits hard off the line. I don't know why Traxxas doesn't build this thing this way out of the box. It's great! Can't wait to put it on dirt at LH's Big Grin ! I highly recommend the changes, and even with the shock parts the bill was only about $55.

was the black oil comment a joke? lol

cheap oil or really old oil turns black. It's clear when it goes in. Was that your first change in oil since you bought it? I usually do it every gallon, or 2 months, whatever comes first.

Yes, joke.
Yes, first shock oil change since new  but we don't run dirt much, but apparently it still gets in there. Differential maintenance is next; haven't done that yet either.....

dirt never gets in shocks or there would be no fluid left in there. It turns black from ????? but not dirt.

The oil turns black from rubbing off the inside of the aluminum shock body.

the black oil is from rubbing in the stock shocks. Best way to get rid of that problem is to get the traxxas gtr shocks. After 3-4 gallons my oil was still clear. Actually from the dirt dawg race i won in spring till the money race at the dd track was the same shock oil and it was always clear and never got dirty. I finally changed it to a lighter oil for another setup but the gtr shocks are a must have for racing. Super super smooth and really make a night and day difference with your trucks handling.

I wondered about the black. Now I know. I thought maybe it was material from the piston? So the GTR shocks are the high end, otherwise change the oil frequently.

yep and the only reason the gtr shocks don't make the oil black is because they are hard coated with teflon.

Those (shocks) will have to go on the "later" list.

hey guys I was thinking about getting a revo and was doing research. looks like the revo is indestructible Big Grin according to what I have been hearing from people. anyways does anyone know if the opti drive is good or not? I mean like does it run out of batterie power quickly or not and how long will it last?

also if I get one what should I upgrade first and into the future?

any help is appreciated.
:joy: :joy: :joy:

I have run for a few hours before having to recharge. It is nice because it charges quickly though. It also has a built in failsafe which is a great feature. Through everything I have thrown at it I only bronk one turnbuckle... and it wasn't at the bash the video was taken at. I love it and the opti drive works great. As long as you are stopped you can shift from foreward to reverse and back... no waiting for engine rpms to drop. The only time I have had a problem with it is if I rush shifting... then I need to stop again. Check out the video... it about sums everything up. The only real weak point that I have found is the plastic carb. It has already developed an air leak. I have plans for a different motor in the future so it doesn't really bother me...

thanks for your help. yea those carbs suck I hate them so much also I forgot to ask but how fast can your truck do and also if anyone knows of any upgrades that are good please post.

For the little time I ran the opti-drive, it worked flawless. Out of the box, I suggest getting a better air filter. I didnt like the stock one too much. Another thing is to get a better steering servo. IMO the stock ones fight each other to center. Which in turn will cause a faster battery drain.

Mine is pretty quick... but I dont know how fast. I need to adjust the 2-speed to shift sooner. I have a pretty good wait the way it is now. As for the steering servos... they will drain the battery fasterork great. Plenty of speed and strenght. I would change them when you can but not make it a priority...

TT,

Optidrive worked mine on mine until I upgraded to the JR XS3 radio, now it doesn't work????? I just watch it when shifting into reverse and all has been fine.

I recommend the radio upgrade. That was the first change we made. You can't run if you can't get an open channel (about $150 used)!!

Better tires (about $100 for tires, foams, wheels).

Steering stop "free" mod to get more steering travel (see Traxxas site, or search threads here).

I just made the P2 rocker/pusher rod/springs/shockoil change and it was very noticable improvement in the handling area of the truck. If you are thinking about track racing, this might be a good thing (about $50)

As for run time, I agree at about 1 hour max on stock battery and dual steering servos. But it does recharge fast, even off the car lighter adapter.
Breaking has been minimal (Because Revos don't break) just one shock and one arm ($10 total).

We Revo the Weevo !!!! Get one !!

Flextek or Hardcore Racing??

Opinions? Why?

flextek because i havent heard of one bad thing about them and i have never heard of anybody running the hardcore ones.

I have heard that they are hard on hinge pins because if you hit something and they flex back that it will bend or snap the front of the hingepins. I guess if I run lunsfords they would have a good warranty...

$300 for a set of either. It's something I really want to do though so I don't have a problem saving. I will need a custom body when this is all done...
