Motor mounts
#1
Has anyone tried the wolf radical big block mod mounts for the rs4-3?

I've never ran those motor mounts but I have put a .21 on an RS4 3 using some mounts I modded from another RC. Its a tight fit but it works. The real problem is the RS43's driveline is too weak for a .21. I used to snap dogbones and strip out pinion gears often and that was with single speed gearing using a 22t clutchbell. Wolfpack radical stuff is good though and should work fine though.

edit.. here is a pic of the first .21 RS43 setup I had. later verson had a serious one piece 4mm thick top plate that I machined that spaned form the front gearcase to the rear gear case and had standoffs in various spots.

That's real sweet! What were the mounts you used? Yes your right it is a tight fit, do you think it would be worth trying to mod up the mad force 3 speed tranny in that chassis, the first thing would have to be is a gas tank mod.

it was probably a couple years back so I don't remember the motor mounts I used now. I think one was from a duratrax RC and the other motor mount I made myself out of some 6mm aluminum I had laying around but I could be wrong because I also made a couple .21 powered RS4 2's. I used a savage header to clear the rear suspension though. before I put the mad thick top plate on the thing it was impossible to keep straight because the chassis would flex al over the place. lol!

I had a Mad force 3 speed assembled on some kyosho 7.5 uprights with brakes that I was going to mount on my Landmax. It was almost 3" long. I don't know if there would physically be anough space on a 1/10 to fit a 3 speed unless you made an extended chassis.

thanks Jon for your info, so your rs4 flexed alot, hmm, was it fun to drive though and fast? Do you think a thicker top chassis would fix that?

Ohh yeah it was fun as hell and silly fast. It was like a rocket in a straight line just not all that reliable. A thick top plate fixed the flexing problem I had with it. Without the top plate the car would torque steer it self into doughnuts every time I stabed the throttle. You could also pick up a thicker chassis for it to fix any flexing problems.

Are you up to milling one for me? Or where could I get one stiff enough to stop the flex?

I don't have the hookup anymore to cut me nice machined parts. A friend of mine used to work as a machinist and would cut me pretty simple shapes out of whatever material I gave him provided I handed him nice dimensioned drawing to go from. I wish I could help ya more but I have no idea where you could get a stiff top plate or chassis. I know I've seen woven graphite top plates for the RS43 but it was a while ago. You could just get the engine mounted and see how the car handles the power. It never hurt mine to drive it when the car torque steered itself around.

I'm sure it cornered like a 9 passenger maxi-van. A bit top-heavy? Probably good drag racing machine with the right tires and gears!! It also shows why CEN went with a midsize block instead of a true BB in their hi speed car. Gotta admire the handiwork to pull it off, though. That's nearly a front exhaust!

actually other than the engine mounts and the flex problems the engine mounted up pretty easily.

My .21 NRS42 was even more of a challenge because I eleminated all the front drive which made it soo light if you whacked the throttle at any speed it would instantly wheelie or do a backflip.

I ended up mounting a wing on the rear, moving the RX pack to the nose and making a front spoiler for the nose plus I mounted a set of foams that were made orignally for an RC10gt. After those mods it Hooked like crazy and was very controlable. Tragically the RX failed mid run and the thing went full speed into a curb and because I had pulled all the bracing out of the front to make it as light as possible. well it really made a taco out of the chassis.. this pic I had removed the engine and servos thats it.

AWESOME DUDE!!! lol

For a 3 speed tranny wouldnt it be easier to use one form the like schumacher or maybe the savage? the madforce one is big plus its chain drive

The chain drive in the mad force is not needed to make it work. all you need is to put some drive cups onto the ends of the shafts of the mad force 3 speed.

The 3 speed unit itself can actually fit onto a 7.5 buggy (or just about any 1/8 scale buggy I guess) but you have to move the front center diff upright forward and shim the upright up a bit, move the gas tank or get a smaller one to clear the 3 speed clutchbell and get a custom made up front driveshaft. A couple guys did this on their Landmax 1 (inferno DX based) and Landmax 2 (mp7.5 baased) rally cars. Its a sweet setup and I almost did it to my landmax 2 but I found a powerfull engine and big clutchbell is a lot more reliable and simple.
