Painting Question
#1
I was bored and made a Chitown R/C mask. It is only with computer paper. Will the paint bleed through the paper and onto the body?

I know one easy way to find out.....try it on scrap material.

Ok. I was thinking of doing that, but wanted to see if I could get a definate answer first. I don't have the paint yet.

Spray cans or airbrush?

Maybe you can coat the paper with something that will make it a better stencil???

I recently used sticky back masking plastic (that house painters use to protect carpets and floors) to mask and trim some painting on a skateboard deck. Worked pretty good!

Spray can. I don't know what I will be able to coat it with.

Check your local hobby shop. A lot of them carry "Blank Masks". Basically it's vinyl masking material which hasn't been cut yet. you could transfer the image to that (making sure it is reversed) then use the transfer tape to place it on the body. Make sure to press it down smooth, as with all vinyl masks, and when the paint dries, pull off the masks.

Ohhh thanks. Any idea how much they go for? Also how would I reverse the image. I used Microsoft Word.

See if you can save it as a Bitmap, then right-click on the file and go to Edit. The file will open in Paint. If that does not work, you can make the file through Microsoft paint, or Publisher and you can flip it from there.

The Uncut Masks are only around $5, I thin I'm not sure if that is one or two 8 1/2" x 11" sheets.

Another option, is to just lay the template you have on top of the uncut sheet, upside down, trace and cut out the image. Just use light pressure, so you only cut through the Vinyl. By using this method, you can move the mask around, and get a LOT of masks from one sheet.

What you did is exactly how I made my lettering on my RC18T body I painted a week ago. just computer paper stencil that was loosley laid against the body and sprayed with cans. it gives a kind of looser style tagged look. heck I use the printer paper stencils for a lot of stuff.

This Body was computer printed stencil just laid against the body loosley.

This body.. too.

and the lettering on This body as well.

If you don't Lay the paint on mega thick it won't bleed though but if you are pitting down thick coats it might beed through.

Ok thanks. I didn't plan on putting the paint on thick. Just a lot of light coats.

u might want to take it to the local library and see if they can laminate it and then cut out the inside with an exacto or something so you can reuse it

if ur using it as a stencil u should have no problems, as a mask it will bleed but just tape it in there tight, and spray a few light coats and u should be fine

If you want cleaner edges, look into the blank masking films, if you want the "Spray look", do what Six mentioned. For the most part, it all depends on the look YOU want. One way to "test" your results, is to take a cleaned out 2 liter bottle, cut it open (so you get used to painting the curves in a body), and try different techniques that way. When you feel confident, move on to painting the body.

a mask is more of one of those sticky sheet things, like the stuff from PARMA the flames and XXX main those kind of things, A stencil is more of something you just hold up to it and paint ur not looking for those CLEAN edges and in some cases it ads to the affect, Like the gusy that paint real fire flames it is all done with one stencil
