Really Frustrated

I need to get new bearings for my trx2.5 but I'd like to race my maxx after I get them.

Paper is a tad too thing IMO to set the mesh. The plastic from a parts bag is a little thicker and much better at setting mesh IMO. That's what I used to do before I switched to doing it by feel.

[QUOTE] [It's either all maxx's or just my maxx that have terrible steering. I doubt I could make some of the turns at the track without having to be marshalled. When I did have it running this last time, it took maybe 10-12ft to make a complete U-turn.

/QUOTE]

if you wan't to race your maxx go ahead,it's all in the set up.
i raced my maxx on the 12th and took 4th in the a main.
it is possible.you could do it too!!

as far as the spur still being a problem,i would say the same and bring it to the track so some people can look at it. others may see something you might have missed.

check the brake. It may be hanging up once in a while (worn, rounded hex, too tight.. ect) if it hangs when you hit the throttle the spur will strip before anything else since it sounds like the rest of the truck is stout.

sounds like your tranny is loose or the top shaft that the spur goes on is bent.

My predator turned on a dime, maybe your dual rate steering is not set for enough throw.

Tex has given some good advice on the spur gear. I have never had a problem with my spur gear on my Supermaxx Predator. I have like 4 gallons on the spur with no problems and it still looks perfect.

As for your steering you obviously has a problem. Dont get fustrated troubleshoot it and find the problem. This is a good chance to learn your truck. If you have to disconnect one link at a time to find out were the problem is it will help you in the long run. I'm running Gen 4 UE Servo Saver with the stiff spring and Airtronics 200 in oz. servo and like Tex said it turns on a dime. There are many places to check for problems let me know if I can help.

Part of my frustration is having no money coming in and having to keep spending. I am starting a job soon, so that should help.

I had about 3 gallons or so on my spur before I started having trouble.

Would it be a good idea to get a new tranny case and top shaft?

me...I would take the free route and disassemble the trans to see if that shaft is bent, and go from there.

Take the shaft out of the trans on chuck it up on a 3/8 drill were the bit would go in the chuck. Then pull the trigger on the drill and watch the shaft. Providing you put the shaft in the drill chuck straight you will see if the shaft is bent when it's spinning. If it's wobbling it bent. Don't be confused It won't be 100% true but it should be very close because it needs to spin at 30,000 rpm so if it's bent it will run out of balance. This is kinda like putting a steel rod in a lathe to turn it down. This must sound crazy using a drill but I know for a fact it will work and give accurate results.

I took apart the trans today. The top shaft is not bent. I did the drill thing. What I did find was that a screw that was in the case was bent and a few of the trans holes are stripped.

Should I try a new case?

Also not part of my problem, but what does this gear do? It is the farthest gear on the right in the picture and it is part number 4995. It doesn't touch any other gear so what can it possibly do?

I used to see like steel thread inserts ( helicoil type ) for repairing tranny mounting holes. I haven't seen any in ages. Haven't looked either for those, so I don't know. Sounds like that would be the likely case. A new set of cases are cheap. I believe I have some if you can't find any. I have a basher It's real heavy & made of used cheaper parts, but nearly indestructable. I had the same problem with the mounting holes. I just drilled the braces & a little filing in the chassis plate & used 6-32 screws & mounted her tight. It is amazing the flex it takes out of ANY truck if all of those screws are tight. Not to mention the drive line & all moving around having a loose trans.. Good luck on your repairs Big Grin

I think you are talking about my steering.

The cap that is at the end of the turnbuckle was rubbing against the steering linkage which kept it from turning. I just shaved some of the cap off. Might not be the right way to fix it, but it works for me.
