How would you spend $500 on racing?
#1
Say you've got $500 budget to get an off-road racer going. And you already have a Revo, so you don't need another one of those, and it really doesn't need to be modded up for $500....what do you go for?

A truggy of some kind? Mayhem, TTR, used LSP, Hellfire, what?
An 1/8 scale buggy? Used something? Mayhem, Jammin'?

Your OPINIONS here....there are no wrong answers, so no bashing anyone's thoughts, please. I'm am interested in where people see the racing thing going in the coming season or two.

Thanks!

Well, personally I like to stick to one class. I'm not sure what you have now I'd buy a spektrum system and my own transponder off the bat.

Got XS3 (and will be fine with it for now) and have transponder.

Let me clarify....the new racer might be the only class we run...the Revo might revert to basher. Maybe. Perhaps the answer to this question will be a different SMT to race other than the Revo. I KNOW I could put $500 into the Revo and do all the new things that are available (motor, pipe, center diff, ext chassis, etc..) , but I'm asking the "blank paper" question here.

I'd love to race buggies but man....there are just too many at LHS, I'd say stick with MT.

I see a lot of brand new or near new crt's for sale from 425-500 shipped. If you want to keep in a mt class I would get the crt or some kind of truggy. That class is going to be huge here this year.

That's the RTR version for that price? Or will you still need to add part$?

truggies and "standards" are both in the MT class.

UMT (or AMT)
SMT (or Prod. MT)

Dave,
For $500, you are not going to be able to do much as far as building a RC for racing. UNLESS you buy a used RTR and that may not be the most competative. It may hold you back at some point or not allow you to work your way up in the ranks as fast.
By the time you buy a roller, motor, starter box, electronics....it'll add up to more than $500...even all used (in most cases)

I say build up the revo, or sell the revo and use the combined money to build a race RC. Truggy, buggy, whatever.

I would prolly get a TTR St-1 with a Novarosi 528x eb mod two servos receiver starter box and transponed

or an M11

Mike, I said $500, not $1500. I expected you to say "Put a Czech body on what you have. At least it will look faster."

Dave do you need an engine and electronics or just a roller. Also remember for your $500 you are also going to need spare parts for back ups, if your racing two classes you will need another transponder.

I assume the $500 is for you?? The way I read your first post you sound like the guy needing help but dont want to admit its him, "I ahve this FRIEND that has this problem" LOL

Dave I would suggest picking up a used 1/8th scale ( an ofna or something) that can be raced but is durable. This will leave you with extra cash for an engine or any spares...

Balt71 is rocco's good friend he is selling a Ofna Violator with a starter box and a ton of spares for somewhere arounf 225 ish (dont quote me on this) Either shoot him a pm or Rocco and they will fill you in more.

By purchasing the Ofna brand spares are easy to get, and they are durable for bashing and racing. By going this route, your not killing your budget just to see if you like scale. If you do then you can always upgrade to a higher end buggy...

Just my 2 cents worth...
A friend will help you move, but a REAL friend will help you move a body.

George, thanks! No mystery, it's for us. Buggy is intriguing but there are LOTS of competition (number of guys) in that class. Truggy was the first thought, but buggy wouldn't suck either.

So let's consider "used" as a viable route to take to get into another class. We wouldn't try to run 2 classes, but I also don't want to sell the Revo (it's just too much fun!). I would take the AMB from it.

Buggy is alot of fun, it is difficult to master hence why I like it so much. Arena are easier to drive like a SMT. They just handle better. To quote soemone on this board, "arena Truck is like a 1/8th scale on crack"

IMO the stiffer the competition the better you will become, I have been racing scale for 3 years now and I am happy with a D main finish.

I dunno what all you have now for RC rides...
I would go with a used Mayhem ST and then get the extended chassis to upgrade it with. They will be coming out with lots of new stuff for this one and also will intro a new pro truck sometime this year.

You can do this for under 500 I would think and still have a really nice ride.
I think the Mayhem ST is getting short changed here due to the slow reponse form the manu on getting newer part out for this ride.

I personally think scale is easier to drive than SMT, and AMT is the easiest. I've owned and raced all 3. That's just my experiences though, everybody has different drive styles and such. I also think AMT class was the "funnest" IMO.

Competition is what you want when racing otherwise it gets boring.

Dave i wouldnt go low-brow with something like an ofna violator. Honestly at this point those buggies all tho they may be good/slightly competetive if that, u will end up just getting frustrated. IMO get a more current buggy and u will be alot happier
