New to RC again
#1
Well I used to race a 10th scale, left turn only, pan car on carpet. Then the place I would go to went under so the car has been sitting in the attic for about 10+ years now. Its in peices, and it's to low to run on the street. The car was made by the same people that make the rc10t. Which I had one of but sold. Both of which were electric. I would like to get back into rc cars again, my buddy got me into these xmod things and I started messing around with them. Fun, but it like a gateway drug it's leading me to big and better things. which brings me to my piont. I'd like to buy a on raod car, 1/10 th scale or larger, nitro, not electric. Something and can tear around a parking lot with or race on a road course if one happens to pop up. What should I buy? where should I look? I live about 5 time from als hobby shop, and I've also noticed that most car come assembled. Why? When I bought cars you'd have to build then yourself.

Also I don't know much about nitro car, or nitro at all. Is there anyone in the area (elmhurst, villa park, lombard) that has somehting like this that they'd like to do alittle schooling on? Thanks in advance.

First off, welcome to the forums and to rc! Big Grin

Those rc10t's are now rc10t4's, highly competetive. Most cars come pre-assembled now becase of all the beginners and lazy people out there lol...

There's a great deal on a huge on road car going on now for only $300, normally about $500.

Other cars to check into are rc10ntc3 (Radio controlled (rc) 1/10 scale (10) Nitro touring car (ntc) 3 (3rd edition)), and some more high end cars like serpent and xray can be waaay up there in prices but they are kits unlike the ntc3.

I'm sure others will have some imput too.

I think thats the same company that makes the subaru body 1/8th scale. I like that car, but I think its more so I like the subaru rather then I like the car. But I was going to buy it used from a guy and money ran short, but he sold it anyways.

Nope, the subaru is made by Kyosho.

If you're talking about kyosho as crap you're wrong... It's like top of the line chit there dude... Losi is ok in offroad 1/10 gas truck but I feel like they're getting left behind by associated, with the release of the GT2.

Were you planning on bying the Subaru 1/8 scale from the guy on here? If so, I am the one who bought it. It is a great car, a little on the big side, but that helps add to the scale look. Also, with the larger size, it is a little more forgiving on slightly rougher terrain (The average parking lot), as opposed to the 1/10 scale on-roads, which need a REALLY smooth surface. The Hot Bodies lightning that R2K linked to is a little longer than the Kyosho one.

Are you looking to race competetively, or bash with the occasional "Race for fun" thrown in? Also, are you looking for on-road or off-road? If offroad, Truck or Buggy?

I'm sure that with those few questions answered, we will be able to give you a better idea which way to start...
I'll keep my God, my freedom, my guns, and my money. You can keep "THE CHANGE."

yeah that would be the car, but I was hoping on-road (hence the forum). I picked up a few rc magazines to scope out whats going on.

So they don't make pan cars anymore? I'm not really surprised. I should hold on to it, it may make me some money one day as a antique. Big Grin

I may just end up buying a truck 1/10 scale, the one I had was pretty cool. And its versatile. so if I decide to race it, I can, and I can still run it around a parking lot all day.

According to Associated's site, their RTR's are made offshore, and the kits are made in the good ole USofA. Confusedalute:

RTR brings good value to someone who isn't looking to upgrade much. Kits allow you to install exactly what you want for engine, radio, servos, etc. without having to strip out the entry level RTR gear and unload it. Hardcore racers generally want kits so they can build it ready to race the first time out.

I got yeah there, thats how all my old cars came, so I understand that, but I'm new to this whole nitro thing so I'm thinking a RTR might be a good way to learn. As long as I can still upgrade a RTR then I'm fine with that. I'm all about displacement, yeah know what I mean.

Hi, and welcome. I'm not so new to the boards, but new to nitro. Just opened my AE MGT SE. I need to break in the negine and since I'm new to nitro, I could use some help. Was thinking of heading to Busse Woods next available Sunday. Maybe you can come out with your Nitro on road and we can figure it all out together with the help of the fine people on here. At any rate, hope you find what you're looking for, and again, welocme!

I went to Al's hobby shop today and seen just how big a 1/8th scale is, I kind of like the whole thing, but now I'm still tossed up about a on-road car or a 1/10th scale stadium truck, like team associated. The guy at Al's told me the traxxas Jato was the way to go, I'm not really sure then I was told a revo...whatever that is. All I noticed was the kyosho inferno gt is 100 dollars more expensive then anything online, even straight from the manufacture. I was also told that if I was going to race a on-road car I should go 10th scale, with the 8th I'd have my ass handed to me. Help me out please, I really like the kyosho 1/8th scale, but I feel like it nothing more then a novelity. The truck seem the best all around, but it wasn't my original plan of action. I'll probably shot up to busse on sunday to see whats up, but other than that does anyone do anything during the week or weekend?

IMO.... if you run 1/10 gas truck, like the AE GT, it will make you a better driver. It is a smaller class but still a lot of fun and fairly cheap to get into. They are fairly inexpensive to upgrade, and can be plenty of fun on or off road around the house.

Monster truck (like the Revo) is another fun class. They are IMO the most fun to bash around with and although the race class is filled with a lot of new racers, it can still be fun. It will however, not really make you a better driver as you can generally plow through a lot of stuff.

1/8 scale buggy or truggy unlimited, are going to be the two most competative classes (1/8 even more than truggy). These are the most expensive, the fastest, and generally take to vehicle tuning the best. You need to be precise in your driving to do well in these classes. I loved them because they were so hard, fast, and competative. If you can afford a truggy, I think it is kind of the best of all worlds.

I am not a big a fan of on-road because they can ONLY be used on-road where an off-road can be driven on-road. 1/10 will be an easier, and slower class while the 1/8 is probably the most expensive class of RC racing. It is very fast, very competative, and again, very expensive.

I hoope that helped a little bit......

AND.....on road racing will cost you in tires. They may be cheaper than off road MT or buggy tires, and they are handy (premounts) but you can grind off a full set in a day of racing...factor that into what you will run.

BUT...if you go onraod electric, you can race indoors all winter long at IRP in DeKalb.

MT (Revo) or truggy, both very flexible trucks. You can play with them, you can race with them. I use the Revo most because it's handier to run than the road car (empty parking lot required).

Unless you are in love with flat pavement racing, I'd look hard at a MT or Truggy. GT is a little cheaper to get into, but I personally wouldn't go bash a GT (unless it's a Jato).

the only thing about a jato is I thought they were illegal according to the pro series rules.......correct me if im wrong

You are right, sorta, there is no class for them because of the engine size and 2spd transmission. Replace those items and you could race it, I guess.

Well I don't really need to leatn to drive, I've been running RC car since I was 12, I just took a long vacation. I might be alittle rusty but I'm sure I could get right back into it. THe xmod thing I was telling you all about is easy as hell to drive probably because it so damn slow. But like I said it "gateway drug" me into in again. Now the truck thing is kinda cool, atleast I thought so when i ran a rc10t way back when, But I only ran on carpet, no jumps to boot. The dirt thing would be a new experience, Though I do really love flat street racing, thats why I had later bought a rc10L to race nascar style with. I loved that, it in my opinion was very competive, everyone has nearly the same motors, bodys, weight, tires. So caughting and overcoming could always be a challange. It usually was running the tallest pinion and could keep the speed going. Thats kind of why I seen a on-raod car and that it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. But then the truck thing started up again. But all in all, I think what I'm going to do it buy an on-road car to play around with and race if I can find an outdoor raceway, and also buy another 10t electric I think, for the all year round sport.

Welcome BACK to RC!

Leisure Hours (the track) in Joliet is open all year and they race off road indoors for year round climate controlled racing Smile In the winter, it's gravySmile

I think you should get a 1/10 Gas Truck, like an RC10GT or Losi XXXNT. Versatile and fun to race.
