elec rc help??
#1
I got a mini-t off motoxer, and this is my first elec rc so i need the help.

Ok one: is it bad if the motor in it gets pretty hot??
Two: i heard that keeping it driving at full speed is bad, true?
And three: Whatever else you guys think i should know about elec rc's

Thanks for the help Big Grin

#1 yes it is normal for an electric motor to get hot at the end of a run, but if it is too hot then it will destroy the in-side of the motor (armature, magnets, etc). One way you can combat that is to play with gearing, and check to make sure the gear mesh isn't set too tight. Also do you have a temp reading of the motor after you get done running?

#2 it’s just like a nitro engine, if you run at full throttle for too long then something might break or it will over heat the motor which can lead to the motor burning up. So yes it is bad to run at full speed all the time.

#3 I don't know what you want to know about (that means ask away I might be able to help you). Big Grin

Thanks that helps some.
How hot should the motor be?
I have a temp gauge but its an onboard one and its on my buggy.
I dont run it full throttle all the time, i stop before turning and do pit stops to me so i can check evrything out.
How do i keep the motor cooler?
Whats gear mesh?
I just changed the pinion gear, its the most amount of teeth, should i change it to a lower one?
The pack came with 3 a small one, medium, and big, i used the big one with the most teeth.

Definately move to the middle or smallest gear. To set gear mesh, put the pinion (little gear) on the motor, and loosen the motor screws. Take a slice of paper and feed it between the two gears. Push the little gear into the little gear. Tighten the motor screws. Take out the paper and your mesh should be good.

idiots. its does no harm to an electric motor to hold it punched. for a good judge if temp you should be able to put your finger on it for a 2-3 count and i mean 123 not 1 mississippi 2.
as for gear smash. you want teh gears to be as tight as possible but still have a tiny tick of play between them and alos so that they are not noisy.
if you are just holding the truck punched up and down the street the bigger pinion will have more top speed but less acceleration. if you are doing a lot of start and stop i would gear down as that will take some heat out of the motor. also i have gotten electric motors hot enough to unsolder themselves and they continue to work. its alos a mini t and motors are pretty cheap so just experiment a bit. any thing else just ask

Thanks for the help guys.
I can deffinatly hold my finger on it for 3 seconds, it hurts a little but i can, lol
I think i have the gear mesh set right, its not to lose and not to tight, ill do the thing with the papper tonight to be sure though.
You guys think i should change it to the smalleer tooth one?
It was flying with the big one in and i want to keep it on, but if i have to.
Thank you all for the help!

Only if you are going to be doing a lot of stopping and going, Chances are your motor is fine (as Chris said, we tend to run motors on the hot side with no problems, unless your me and can fry a mod brush motor a week, lol). But if you want to play with gear ratios you can, but it may not be needed. Also if your esc isn't hot, then your motor should be fine (if the esc was very hot as well then you might have a gear issue, the wrong motor or too much friction some where)

Chris I always thought you couldn't run a motor at full speed for a long time (I guess I read wrong somewhere).

The esc is never hot just a little warm and thats it.
I guess i'll keep the gearing the same because i like the speed i've picked up with the big pinion gear :joy:
I dont stop alot, i go down my road with it full speed and hit the break and it spinds 3 or 4 times and pops around then hit the gas again until it hits the other end of the road, lol
Its pretty much always got the gas hit if not full throttle its half.
I guess it should be fine since i can touch my finger against it and keep it on forever, right?

Ounce again thank you all for the help, now i wont be so paironoid about punching the throttle Big Grin

go to the middle one if you still want some speed but it should get the temps down some

It actually is worse to hold an electric car at partial throttle as opposed to hitting top speed.

You serious?
Then i guess i'll keep it at FULL speed! :racing:

Also my esc started fallinf off when running, and its held on a sticky piece of foam.
Would my lhs have a piece of this so i could replace it?

Also does anyone have some batts for a mini-t?
The one im using is a intellec 1400 mah side C Pack...

nitro its just a double stick tape. the lhs will have it we call it servo tape, you can also get it made by 3m from any store i got a lifetime supply roll for like 5-6 dollars, the stuff i have is white in color and has a white paper with green designs on it.

Alright cool, then i guess im going to go get that from my lhs (i go there waaaay to much, lol)
