Any rock crawling fans out there? Our Friends at Hobby Town USA in Orland have just let me know that they are working on having an indoor rock crawling event towards the end of January. The cool part about it is that this will be their first one, and they are looking for suggestions! If you are a rock crawler and always thought things should be done this way or that.. now is your chance! What type of course? What should the rules be? Any wish list prizes?
I have started a thread in the Big Squid Forum HERE for anyone to post their thoughts and suggestions. We will then be taking the suggestions and working with Hobby Town to come up with a cool event!
Where are the Rock Crawlers at? This is your chance to get a good local event going!

There is no official date yet, because they want to make sure they have everything ready and in place. I hear the track/course is still being worked on as well as a few other things. They are shooting for the end of January. I'll post more details as I get them.

The event will be whatever we make of it.. it's the reason I started the thread and forum section, but feel free to post anywhere. They are looking for suggestions on rules, track, you name it. Sorry to tell you, they will probably allow axials. I think for the first one, we'll have to see how the turn out is, but my guess it would be just open class to get things rolling with 1/10th scale types. Probably no 1/6ths I'm guessing.
The track/course is still being built and will probably be made up of all sorts of things.

Rules...go with the standard rules from nationals (if you need them I can post them)
As for the course...Check out Naperville HT's. Ive been helping them build it for awhile now and its finally about 90% done (and crawlable). It would be nice to see a course that doesnt allow 1 vehicle to excel... WHat I mean is I have 2 trucks built to handle 2 different courses. 1 is built with a high belly pan for rock courses and I have another built for climbs and sidehilling. I do have a truck that is a good mix but doesnt excel at either, I would realy like to see the course have a good mix. (I think I rambled too much)
Oh and the axial comment was a joke... Im just tired of seeing that green everywhere I turn!!!!

Myself and Mnstersbro are looking at attending. I am the go to rules guy, The Illinois the rules chairman if you will. In the rules chairman section of RCC they are currently setting up the 2008 rules. You'll probably have to run the 2007 rules until they are anounced to the public. If you need help let me know. 99% of all crawler courses are generally setup as gated runs. Tennis ball halfs mark the course the driver is penalized for reverses, touching gate markers, repairs, repositions, rollovers. Depending on the size or difficulty level of your course this may be the route you want to take.
The 2007 rules are here at this link.

Generally course construction needs to be very difficult. I'm not talking tiny rocks to high center on thats lame. The course needs steep climbs and obsticles that throw the truck off center. A difficult course gives the driver a sense of I can belive I made it through! Easy courses are pretty boring as most anyone can make it. The more rocky the better.
How large of a area do we have to work with?

Thanks for the rules link, I'll make sure to check it out. I hope to get out to the location this weekend and see what kind of space we are looking at, as well as take any/all suggestions over there for discussion. Hopefully I can meet up with Chris and Bill and we can discuss some course ideas.

Most of the courses are constructed from Styrofoam blocks that are shaped then glued to a plywood sheet then sprayed with truck bed liner. It's light weight, cheap and easy to work with.

well, there is not that must room. so it will probably be once forward then once backward timed, then penalty seconds for reversing, or going off coarse. it is more like a trials coarse. 2 planks set to width to climb to get to the coarse one way, and we are thinking 2 cables set to width to get up/down the other way. like i said, room is limited. the coarse is made of foam and great stuff, with a layer of rhino liner to keep it from getting busted up. we were going to do a coat of thin set, but the pieces had to be portable for storage, so we were worried about that cracking and breaking off.

Some videos I hate watching.. Many people are soooo jerky when they drive there rig its a bore to watch. I like smooth lines.. run it like you would run a rig.. not gas.. brake.. gas brake.. its like they are jumping forward 4 feet and stopping.. just blasting to the next step.
sorry just had to vent.. its not easy for stores to make areas for offroad thats for sure. It costs them money in both pieces and store space.. I just enjoy running my rig no matter where it is.. as long as i got something to climb i have a smile on my face

This is where we could have used a little more help. That is what we were working with, but the description that we got was second hand, from what the Hobby shop owner heard from the guys at the Axial crawling spot at the Hobby show.
