Crawler Track @ RC Hobbies in Naperville
#1
I was picking up some parts for my RC8 at this new hobby shop over by 88 and route 59. I saw this awesome rock crawling track there and now it has my attention. The owner was a really cool guy and let me drive around the shop truck for a demo. I thought the layout was awesome because when get bored you can just move the rocks for a different coarse. Are there any other places like this in the area, which has a track the you can change after awhile?? I'm more from the 1/8 buggy racing community but I think this would be awesome to do in my spare time.

P.S. This is the hobby shop's address, hopefully they can grow to be just as big as AL's Hobbies and Leisure Hours!!!

HobbyTown in Naperville has allot better course, HobbyTown in Orland is supposed to be building a course and Leisure says they are thinking about building one. Also we have outdoor natural locations.

I was at RC HOBBIES today as well from Noon - 1pm. The owner was great, and the space in the back with the course was also nice. I was noly able ot stay for the hour, but they let me run the new truck on the course, and since I had never done ANY crawling in the past, so it was cool to try it with the new truck in an unintimidating environment. I am looking forward Saturday at HobbyTown as well. HOPEFULLY comps can be coordinated between the 2 locations....and maybe more to make a circuit of it all. RC Hobbies was GREAT, and well worth the trip from Streamwood. Good job RC Hobbies!!

I stopped at the HobbyTown in Naperville today to check out the course I wish it was out side. I think if I take out my droop screws on my RC8 that course would be kick ass. Its really flat and not much claim, it would be perfect for people who don't have a crawler, maybe like a T4 or just a plain monster truck. I wish they would have spent some more time on it and made it a little bigger or even taller. But I'm not one to bash the tracks in the area! As long as people show up and have fun everyday then that is what matters. I hate going to those tracks with people that have an ego problems, and think there stuff is the best.

Part of the reason the HT track isnt as tall as it should is because of its location in the store. If it could have been built in a corner or side of the shop it would have been better. The nice thing is its not done, there are plans to make it larger, and believe it or not its pretty hard as it sits. There were several trucks that pointed out in the last comp.
I have talked with the RChobbies guys (Bill the owner is a realy nice guy) and they are going to make some improvements to their course over the next month that will make it allot better. The problem I have with there course is that its all rock and that leads to high centering and broken parts. But, they did what they could with the room they have. Its realy nice to see shops building courses and embracing crawling.

Not to bash anyone, but if you see some of the courses in Japan and in the European countries for 1/8 racing they run in 6" grass, wood, chain link fence and piles of rocks then back on dirt. In the states we are too easy.... we just stick to dirt..lol

Rc hobbies has a course? All I can see from the pictures is a tiny pile of pebbles against a wall.

Look at the BigSquid link. It's MUCH bigger than those pics from SBNFred make it look.

It is better than in the pics but, not as nice as what we run on at HT. The big advantage I see with their course is the climb, its about 4' high but, its not very realistic unless all you climb is ditches and overpass's. You have to keep in mind they built it to demo the axials on not as a comp course like HT did.

I'm not bashing the place, but lets say the thought of holding a comp there is a little bit on the side of not worth it. At least at this point in time.Big Grin

It's a good demo.

It's just not going to grow visitor wise until the course grows.

Having a course made of tiny rocks just blows. Sure you can change it up, but so can the trucks. All you do is get hung up all the time, there is no thrill to it you just bounce rock to rock. It's not like slick rock where tuning makes a difference and you actually conquer stuff through good driving.

They are very very willing to let anyone drive the store truck but, I think allot of people go in to drive it without intent to buy.

As for their course, the high centering is no fun at all, I have talked to the owner (he contacted me about holding a comp) and they are looking at getting in some larger flat stuff for some slick rock obsticles etc. I realy hope they do improve it because we need more than 1 indoor course but, at this point I just dont think its going to happen.

I made it to the top of the pile with the store's stock truck. It took a bit but there are many different lines you can take. High centering is part of competition courses. This demo course is plenty fun and very doable. If I had the $$$ I would have bought one.
