With my new Savage, the mesh with the first spur may have been a little tight, anyway it just melted - I mean drips of plastic underneath.
Ok, so maybe the mesh was too tight, I bought a new one, the mesh was perfect, 10 minutes into break in (yes I'm still breaking it in) the spur gear is melted again??
I've talked to others who've had the same problem.
At this point I'm going to get a metal spur, someone also said aluminum shoes will cure this?

Maybe the slipper was too loose causing it to build up enough heat to melt.

Nah, it was maybe 1/4 turn from closed. I've read that this seems to be a common problem with the 4.6. I ordered some aluminum shoes which are supposed to solve the problem.

I would check the clutch shoes or the clutch bell. I had a similar problem on one of my cars.

Does that have the dual disc brakes? Check to make sure it's not rubbing on the clutch bell. I had that problem once. The CB gets very hot and will melt the spur. I've run .26 and .28 motors in my savage and never melted spurs just because. It was always something I did wrong.

I've been talking to alot of people with the new Savage and they are experiencing the same thing. One guy said his tranny was stuck in 2nd gear from the factory. Some said the stock clutch springs are too weak and the shoes drag during idle. Almost every says they bought aluminum shoes and it solved the problem.
I'm going to call HPI and complain tomorrow.
I'll check the brakes though to make sure their not rubbing.

RC DAD why would the chutch springs make the spur melt?

Apparently they are so weak that even at idle their allowing the shoes to drag around the CB.

Your clutch bell would have to glow red to be hot enough to melt the spur. is there a sliper on the spur?

Maybe something is binding in the driveline or internal on the tranny. A slight drag on the clutch shoes wouldnt be enough to cause that spur to melt IMO.

To give an example. I ran through over 5 gallons on my Mach .26 with the stock 3 shoe setup from hpi with no problems ever. That motor made crazy power too.
It takes ALOT of heat to melt a spur. Do as snakebite said and check for binding. Have you checked the brake disc/clutchbell spacing yet? That is one form of binding. Normally not a problem unless the spur gear and clutch bell are geared wrong.

the same thing happend to my manager at work and when he called HPI they told him to tightin the spur down all the way and do not back off at all.

When I built my savage i didnt tighen the flywheel enough amd it sliped on the brass collet causing the spur to melt when I shut it down. Might be something to check. Hold the flywheel and use that roto stats and make sure there tight. I finally figured it out after it got so loose it wouldnt idle.

Oh sorry, I put the aluminum clutch shoes in and BAM! fixed. I ran all day and the SG still looks like new. The stock clutch shoes are just not made for the big block engine.
I called HPI and tried to get them to admit it but all they would do is send me a new SG (so I've got a spare now).
Now I've got to get my shocks properly bled. I had no idea air in the shocks were a problem.
