My fears are confirmed. I broke my 4-spider gear modded rear diff.
#1
I had a feeling that I might have broken my rear diff on monday. The last tank I ran through the car, although running ok, didn't feel right. From a standing start on the back stretch, I noticed that the front tires spun much harder that the rear. The rear still had power, but not the kind that gave me wheelies earlier in the evening. I could only think of two things that would cause this. Loose rear wheels (not the case, I checked them right away after finishing of the tank) or a broken rear diff.

Just a few minutes ago I locked down one of the outdrive dogbones and held up the truck by the front tires and began rotating. I was able to hold the truck parallel to the floor no problem, front diff is good. Did the same again, but holding the rear tires instead. About half way to the leveling the truck out (like I did with the front diff test) the diff gave way. It couldn't even hold up to the truck's weight Sad.

Time to head off to Al's for some parts. I'll check back a little later with some pics of my findings when I tear the diff apart.

Looks like I'm going to be upgrading the diff oil from a 5k/3k combo to the 50k/30k combo much earlier than expected. Big Grin

That sucks, but hey atleast it a cheap fix. Just time consuming. The savage diff is hard to get too.

We were just talking about the Diffs on your Savage on Saturday Tune... Looks like you've been cursed with my bug... Everytime I commented on how good something was working out, or how I never had a problem with something breaking, I soon was on the way to the Hobby Shop...

I'm sure you will like the heavier diff fluid combo in the truck....

While you are at the Hobby shop, you should look into the Combination Charging jack/power switch... I know that charging a, Rx pack on a Savage can be a task....

I know how you feel. Maybe I should just say my enitre truck is junk, just to prevent breakage Smile.

man that sucks. Thats what happens though when you put big power into these trucks.

what exactly broke? was it the ring or pinion or the spider gears? on my hybrid I have to replace the spider gears every gallon or so. they usually wear then get to a point where the spider's get weak and one breaks. Sad Pain in the butt to fix.

Not sure yet. I haven't taken it apart. I'm pretty sure it's one spider gears. I'm willing to bet that a groove began forming in the diff housing where the cross pins sit. The gear moved around too much, and boom, their toast. I'll be posting pics tomorrow night when I get it taken apart.
