Windows Vista
#26
I would like to get a new laptop (mine is really old now) but I'm not sure what kind to get. It would be nice if they would offer me a new upgrade, but I'm thinkin' mine is too old. Sad

I'm sure we'll be getting a copy of the corporate pro edition or whatever MS decides to roll out.

Now that it has been a few weeks, how has the Vista been performing? Have you noticed any glitches, or programs not working? Have there been any Device driver issues?

I've recently upgraded my computer, and considering getting Vista.

Let's see here.

1. There are no drivers yet for me HP scanner. After doing some research, HP said they will release drivers for there products on or after the offficial release date, so looks like I'm without a scanner until then.

2. There are no drivers for my vinyl cutter either. The ones on the disk are for NT based computers. XP has no problems using NT drivers and the cutter works great with it. On vista, I get an error saying NT drivers are not allowed due to a setting in the security group policy. I still haven't found out where that is so I can make the neccessary changes to allow NT drivers.

3. Prolly the biggest issue I can utill about a week ago. If you installed divx drivers, any time opened a folder that contain divx videos a 'com surrogate' error would pop up. Very, very annoying!! They just released and new version that should work with vista, but is still considered beta. I installed it and haven't had any problems since. So this one might have finally got sorted out. I believe the newerst version is 6.4. Anything older will NOT work properly

4. In my device manager I have an unkown device too. Problem is, I have now idea what it could be either because everything is working. Everything that is plugged in is working and the hardware is supposed to be vista compatible according to dell.

That's about it so far other than the fact that vista is a resource hog! I have 1gig of ram and 45% of it is required just to run vista at idle with no other programs going. Vista loves RAM! Get as much as you can get IMO. I'll be upgrading to 2gig sometime this month I think.
