lsp break in
#1
ok guys. What is the best way to break in a n engine. I have always broke mine in the traxxas way but everyone here thinks traxxas is junk so I was wondering if there is a good way to do it. I don't know the if the Hot Bodies way is ok. It says tank1 sit and idle out, tank2-4 lean out 1/4 turn and drive it around for the whole tank. That idleing out thing I tried before. It keeps loading up and wants to die how do you keep it running without hittin the gas?
Thanks for all the advice.
Jeff

get it up to temp (around 200 ATLEAST) and run it for about 3-4 and shut it off and let it cool down Do this about 5-6 times. Keep ROLLING the throttle no blipping and keep it around half to quarter throttle and keep driving it around. Once you do that start running full tanks through I would say another 5-6 tanks and after about 2 full tanks u can start leaning it out here and there an start making it up to full throttle but dont stay there to long....hope that makes sense

the heat cycle method is pretty much what czech just described... IMO it is pretty much the industry standard for break-in

How much longer will the engine last (tuned properly) doing the heat cycle method compared to say the traxxas way or the os way?

As long as you don't overheat it it should last a long time? That XTM 24.7 in my Savage lasted 15 gallons! I told you it was 10 gal but talked to my buddy and he said 15 gallons!! You got that thing broke in yet or what?? Got the Mutilator all broke in today! You want some of it now or later!! LMFAO!! j/k:bustingup

Here's my break in method

heat up the motor to 200F + (before attempting to start it)

Drive the first tank pretty soft

second tank a little faster

by tank three I'm hitting full throttle but let off right away and be smooth with the trigger finger

4th tank race tune it

In any method....make sure a cooling cycle is done with the piston at bottom of the stroke. Look down the plug hole to find bottom, mark the flywheel and then use that mark to rotate the engine when it's off.

thanks everyone. I broke it in all correctly. usisng actually a little more time to make sure it was good. I'm having trouble regulating temps now. I have tried everything I can think of. One run it'll be great at 215 and I'll let it cool off 20 mins later run it agail and 1/3 way thru the tank she'll hit 265 and I gotta kill it fast. I have already contacted hot bodies about it. Just like to ad that they are supper fast with replies to the concerns. wish me luck. Hoping that it'll work itself out or I'll be plenty pissed if I have to get a new motor!

ok so Hot bodies told me that it is normal for this engine to run 240-270. Sound logical? I've always heard 240 MAXX

there is no such thing as maxx temp (within reason of course) if it runs good with good smoke at 280 leave it 240-260 is always a good temp for hot summer weather. Indoor when its cold 200-230 is usually about normal

if the temp keeps going up u might be a little lean on the bottom, try the pinch test should be around 2-4 seconds

About the smoke concern, when I am just running in front of my house (break-in) it is hard to see the smoke even if there is a lot. I don't know if it is too bright out or the color of the street or what.
