Correct foam width for CF MT tires?
#1
The foams that come with Proline Crimefighter MT tires are 3-3/16" wide. The tire is 2.72" wide. Do you have to trim the foams to 2.72" width to fit the tire properly?

Second part of the question: If using three parts foams, like Racers Edge foams, do you trim the outside rings, or the center ring, to get to the proper width?

Thanks!

Foam is squishy. No biggie if it's a little bigger than the tire Smile.

Those RE foams are Maxx sized and the CF's are narrower than Maxx tires. I'm gonna trim 'em down to the same width as the PL foams that came with the tires.

Never force anything, there is a properly sized hammer for every task.

I wouldn't cut them Dave, I cut my Trinity 3-stage foams to fit better and now the foams seem too small. They move around in there in the turns and stuff.

If you do cut, cut a very small amount. Personally I wouldn't cut them at all.

Like I said before, I gotta think proline knows what width they want in the tire, and that's the foam they include.

I am going to trial fit the tires with the RE foams forced in there and see if the tires are bulged. If they are, I'm trimming them to proline width for glue up.

__________

Just fit one up and to me it looks like the sidewalls are really pushing out. I'm going to radius the edges and see how that looks.

The foam they include with the crimefighters is junk! Learn from my mistake. My tires have flat spots because of the crappy stock foam. Rocco will be me up on it, as he saw it first hand. I'll be pulling those tires off the rims and changing out foams (shoulda done it right the first time, but oh well).

I used Trinity 3-stage and cut the center foam before glueing. I cut off about a 1/4 of inch off. I have almost a gallon on them and the foams are as good as the day I put them in. Very tight in the tire and very firm.

Trinity foams are slightly bigger than the Re foams.

I have used both and never trimmed either.

If Proline knew what they where doing theywould have made a better foam. I think they just have a cheap foam stock and throw it in with every tire.

You want to have a little extra side foam, this fills in the side way and it will be the first to break down, so the little extra compensates for the break down.

Just stuff it all in there. The CF's will mount up real nice in the wheels bead.

Not to really throw a wrench at you, plug the vent hole on the wheel with shoo goo or something similar and then get a leather punch and vent the tire on the inner side wall. 2 holes 180* apart from each other. This will prevent dirt and water from entering tire and break down your foams very early.

George, and you punch the tread face of the tire also to let water and dirt out, yes? And now that I ask it gets me thinking. If the face of the tire is vented to let water and dirt out, why vent it anywhere else?

Being the sceptic/novice that I am, I emailed ProLine custmer support on this subject. Their promotions coordinator replied:

Dave,
Thank you for supporting Pro-Line/Protoform products. We recommend easing the edge slightly to help contour the foam. The foam is wider on purpose to help reduce sidewall flex.

Then I asked him about even wider Racers edge foams:

Dave,
It is not a bad thing as long as the foam does not bunch up in the tire. Usually the more foam the better, the biggest problem in monster truck tires is the sidewall and overall tire flex. Most racers try to eliminate as much side wall flex as possible by using as much foam as possible. Sometime back we use to use a full truck foam in the rear of our 1/10th buggy tires, it seemed to help the tire hold shape and have less flex when cornering.

So, bottom line, you guys were right AGAIN! When will I learn to listen? Probably never. So I did use the RE foams and just slightly eased the edges, especially the edge against the rim bead to make it a tiny bit easier on the sidewall glue edge. Dry fir them and all looks great. Used strapping tape inside for "belting" and am ready to glue them up. Still listening for the vented sidewall/tread answer to settle.

Thanks!
